About this listen

Dr. Hill McCall and her wife Alice dreamed of developing a sanctuary for unwanted cats and dogs to live out their lives as a retirement project. Hill has secretly worked on the project for months when a wealthy benefactor surprises her with a large donation, allowing Hill to be more aggressive with the project’s opening. A group home operator approaches Hill about summer volunteer positions for four girls as Fairytail Farm becomes more than just a sanctuary for the animals. It creates an environment of love and kindness for the animals and all that support the project. Several love stories develop from first love to mature couples who have found their forever person. Fairytail Farm is more than a dream come true. It is a home for happily ever afters.

This was a wonderful story. The part about Rex touched me deeply, When my wife died our Doxie was lost without her. When I brought her ashes home he relaxed as if he knew she was home again. The rest of the story about the girls and the farm was sweet and really emphasized the importance of adopting ( humans and animals as well). Definitely a good story with a message. Well done!

This is a sweet story that I imagine is the novel version of the author's fantasy for her retirement life. It's a charmingly imagined "what if someone gave us the money to launch a lesbian-owned animal rescue farm that we could run in our retirement?" story. The fantasy world is pretty much free of conflict or regulation, which makes for gentle storytelling, if less realism.

I love Violet Dixon's narration. She's great at making subtly different voices for the many characters who are generally similar in this story. And I was exactly in the mood for a well-told story about nice people coming together to do good in the world.

Sweet "realistic fantasy" story
