About this listen

From "the standard-bearer of alternate history" (USA Today) comes the second installment in an all new series, set in an alternate 1950s in which General MacArthur ignites a nuclear war that nearly destroys the planet.

With the destruction of Paris by the Russian bombers, an already hot war ramps up to scalding. And even those whose lives have not yet been substantially touched by the war now find themselves in the midst of a living hell as Russia and the US continue to raise the stakes, wiping more and more cities off the face of the globe forever.

needs better pauses

Any additional comments?

I would like to see a little more of a pause between sections. Sometimes the narrator goes from one section to another, changing setting and characters, with hardly an intake of breath to indicate the change. It can be a little confusing.

Excellent story; excellent narration!

This second novel in the trilogy covering a very early Cold War turned hot sees the series finally hitting stride. Turtledove makes the characters feel real and not just like cardboard cutouts, which is something he often struggles with.

Great Read!

Any additional comments?

I grabbed this book while on a camping trip and couldn't put it down- had to down load the Audible version to listen to on my commute when I returned. I didn't realize that this was the second in the series so I can assume that Bombs Away had some more of the back story but it read fine as a stand alone. May suggest reading Bombs Away first, but this was definitely a fun book to read!

Another Turtle dove classic

My review? I can't wait to dig into the third book in this series. Does that tell you what you need to know?

turtledove is great

turtledove writes well, the charter development is very strong. Look at both sides gives a different perspective on conflict. he builds his charters with great care. I've noticed that all of the serries have a woman on each side of the conflict. there are a few other details that run through his stories.

The best alternate history

Great what if? story. Can't wait for the next installment. The best narration yet of any books I have listened to on Audible.

Warsaw rise

We see how boring this war is getting, and the cracks in the society and Soviet union. I really like how the polls are rising up.
