About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Olivia Vinall, who is known for her roles in Apple Tree Yard and The Woman in White. This definitive recording includes an introduction by Rosemarie Morgan.

Independent and spirited Bathsheba Everdene has come to Weatherbury to take up her position as a farmer on the largest estate in the area. Her bold presence draws three very different suitors: the gentleman-farmer Boldwood, soldier-seducer Sergeant Troy and the devoted shepherd Gabriel Oak. Each, in contrasting ways, unsettles her decisions and complicates her life, and tragedy ensues, threatening the stability of the whole community. The first of his works set in Wessex, Hardy's novel of swiftpassion and slow courtship is imbued with his evocative descriptions of rural life and landscapes, and with unflinching honesty about sexual relationships.

Don’t miss this poetic masterpiece. Hardy’s language creates a movie in the mind of the reader. It is a window into the world of life in England in the late 1800s.

Excellent story

Rosemarie Morgan was amazing as the narrator but after finishing this realized that it was missing the original chapter 16 ‘ All Souls and All Saints’. Had to purchased Kindle edition to look up this oversight; felt it was important to story line and have no idea was it was omitted. Other than that was a great classic.

Great Narrator

I love every moment of this book. The ancient agricultural customs, feats days to mark the year, reading of the stars, the reference to time, the characterizations filled up my heart once more. It is an all time favorite.

His Best

I loved this novel and I loved the narration. I’m not sure I would’ve gotten as much out of it if I read it as opposed to hearing it because Olivia Vinall’s Narration really brought the characters to life. This is a bittersweet love story, which really is the best kind where perhaps not everyone lives happily ever after but it’s not tragic either. Loved it! Highly recommend!
