About this listen

“I am fat,” begins Judith Moore’s unflinching account of her life. As she describes her obsessions with food, struggles with self image and troubled relationships, she refuses to become an object of pity. Moore is the recipient of two NEA grants and a Guggenheim fellowship. Her previous book, also a memoir, was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year.

This was a very well written memoir. I listened quickly and I sometimes have difficulty staying interested in audio books. Other reviewers described the story as sad, but I didn't see it that way. I thought it was just very raw and open. Obviously there were sad elements, but there were also good ones, and kindness interspersed. I enjoyed the story and appreciated the viewpoint and the insights.

It kept me interested

Poor little kid.
If you’re the type of person that get emotionally involved, prepare for a ride. I swear to god , I wanted to steal this little girl and tell her she was wonderful until she agreed. Mean grandmas are a horrible waste.

Heartbreaking

This listen was so far from what I expected. There was no hope, no strength, and no word of a future with purpose. I’m saddened from listening and not enriched in any way. The writer missed an opportunity to inspire others who may have similar experiences. I believe she over-shared and under-delivered.

Disappointing and brutal

An honest struggle sorry story that mounts to nothing in the end. You keep hoping it will be interesting at some point but it doesn’t. I love sad stories, but this is just ick.

Pathetic but honest

The first thing that struck me was that the reader/performer must have been the author, since there was such suppressed anger and vitriol. I was surprised to find that was not the case. However, it rings true, since I've often been told that every lb. of overweight is a lb. of anger unexpressed.

It bothered me that the author never dealt with her obesity. But she clearly stated at the beginning this is not what this book was to deliver. It left me feeling depressed, angry; wanting more. (Perhaps that says something about me not dealing with my issues?)

I do hope she got some peace at some point during her life. It would be a tragedy for this little, lost, unloved girl. My heart broke for her. If that was point of the book, and that is the only reason I could ascertain it was written, then the author succeeded.

Angry, Honest and Painful
