Critic reviews

"I had a novel with problems I didn't know how to solve. After James Scott Bell's class, I knew the solutions. This was easily the most practical writing class I ever attended. I sold my novel using what I learned." (Darrell James, author of Nazareth Child)

Good teacher

Bell is one of the better voices to listen to regarding writing advice. Lots of good stuff in here & some tidbits from other writers to boot.

Good collection of essays for writers

This is a very solid collection of essays for writers. Del was a regular contributor to writers digest magazine and many of the topics here are quite good. Most are oriented towards fiction writers, especially genre novelists. There are also essays that are more motivational and about the publishing industry or self publishing. But as a collection it’s not as strong as similar books like Save the Cat, Story or those by Lawrence Block. But if you are a fan of Bell’s fiction or non-fiction then it is a no-brainer.

Excellent Delivery

Mr.Bell provides good information not only about craft, but also about both traditional and indie publishing. But I think that what really stood out for me was the multitude of interviews with current best selling authors such as Lee Childs and Larry Brooks. This is one that I will definitely be listening to again. It's going into my writer's toolbox--under motivation and advice. Lastly, but definitely not least, the narrator's performance was outstanding! I'm going to look for other books he narrated.

useful tips delivered with wit

I am able to listen to books while at my full-time day job. This title—written by the affable Mr. Bell, and narrated by the Mr. Basil—was a pleasure to listen to. I found myself bookmarking several parts of the book for later reference. Recommended listening for novices like myself. I would imagine that more advanced writers will benefit as well since Mr. Bell provides insights and tips into the craft, commitment, and art that has even more relevance now in the new age of digital publishing.

His usual crap (again)

“You must study the craft!” he says again and again. But, sir, I thought that’s what I was doing by buying your book? And your book didn’t say too much about how to be a better writer, no techniques, no applicable advice, just long winded discussion. You keep telling me to study the craft. And now I must follow your advice by purchasing someone else’s books because I really do need to get started on that...
