There is one sure-fire way of improving your novel fast...
You may know the fundamentals of how to write fiction. You may be more than competent in plot, structure and characters. But if your dialogue is dull it will drag the whole story down.
On the other hand, if your dialogue is crisp and full of tension it immediately grabs the reader. And if that reader is an agent or editor, sharp dialogue will give them instant assurance that you know what you're doing as a writer.
Writing a best seller or hot screenplay is no easy task, but dazzling dialogue is an absolute essential if you want to get there. The best part is, the skills of the dialogue craft are easy to understand and put into practice.
Number one best-selling writing coach James Scott Bell has put together and expanded upon the dialogue lectures from his popular writing seminars. In How to Write Dazzling Dialogue you'll learn:
- What fictional dialogue is...and isn't
- The 11 secrets of crafting memorable dialogue
- The 5 essential tasks of dialogue
- 5 ways to improve your dialogue ear
- 4 can't-miss methods to increase conflict and tension in any dialogue exchange
- The top 10 dialogue issues, and how to resolve them
You'll also see dazzling dialogue in action with examples from hit novels and screenplays.
Don't sabotage your chances of selling your work to readers or publishers because the dialogue is unexceptional. Dazzle them with what the characters say. How to Write Dazzling Dialogue will give you the tools to do it.

HOWEVER, I pray he reads this…I would tell him he should not narrate this himself. He must have allergies or a cold but it was painful to listen to- between the gulping of nasal drip, high static background, and the fingers squeezing the nose voice, it nearly made me stop listening.
Please have a professional read your book! The information is phenomenal but it’s painful to listen due to the things I’ve listed.
Redo the audiobook for future listeners.
Sorry, but it’s true.

very useful tips and ideas!
many GOOD examples that show the point.
what can be improved: the audiobook format should have an accompanying PDF or images to show what the author is saying about correct punctuation. simply listening where to put the proper punctuation isn't as memorable for something (punctuation rules on a novel) that is an entirely VISUAL experience.
useful and enjoyable!

He uses many pop culture examples, which normally I am not fond of for writing advice books. Most don’t explain the source they are referencing, alienating readers. For example, most advice books would say something like “the scene where Joe discovers the body has some great dialogue.” And then it would go launching into an explanation about the subtleties of the dialogue and how you can emulate it. But if you don’t know the source, you’re just left wondering who is Joe, what’s up with the body, how did he discover it? It becomes a distraction instead of a help.
That’s why I really like what Bell does. He very clearly explains the context of any scene and characters within it before launching into quotes from the scene. It makes it so much easier to follow and appreciate his advice.
Easy recommendation for writers of any skill level.
