Story
Tennessee, 1950: a time and place that straddles the past and present. Ivorie Walker is considered an old maid by the town (though she’s only in her early 30s), and she takes that label with good humor and a grain of salt. Ever since her parents passed away, she has hidden her loneliness behind a fierce independence and a claim of not needing anyone. But when she realizes that someone has been stealing vegetables from her garden - a feral, dirty-faced boy who disappears into the hills - something about him haunts Ivorie.

Editorial reviews
The author's introduction challenges listeners with a new word - "ungrace" - and sets forth her narrative mission. She wants to describe how she moved from this uncomfortable state with stories that remind listeners of their own lives. "I was a cynic before I entered kindergarten," VanLiere reports after she describes her first molestation at age 3 with the kind of anger that comes from one who's suffered in this way and kept it secret for many years. Her story is an integrated view of her path to a relationship with God. Quotations from all kinds of literature merge with her frank revelations and Bible references. Most importantly, she vividly tells stories of horrors, sadness, and, finally, grace with a personable tone that makes readers cheer her growth and ultimate success.

Story
Midwife Kim Osterholzer ushers listeners behind the doors of Amish homes as she recounts her adventures answering God's call to the craft of midwifery. Kim chronicles her nine-year apprenticeship grappling with the nuances and idiosyncrasies of homebirth. She recounts the beauty and painstaking effort of those early years spent catching babies by the light of crackling woodstoves, oil lamps, and lanterns. Every birth enthralled her, whether it involved halting hemorrhages, sharing breath with tiny lungs, or bouncing through wild rides in ambulances.

Finding Grace... and joy, delight, and camaraderie
What a heartbreaking, beautiful, glorious story. Told with such feeling and candor, I feel like I've lived it. It makes me want the delightful parts of the author's life... but teaches me that God has a better plan than that. And that THAT is more than okay!
