About this listen

Winner of the 2023 Grammy for Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording!

Audie Award Winner for Audiobook of the Year!

Narrated by Viola Davis

In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever.

This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

As I wrote Finding Me, my eyes were open to the truth of how our stories are often not given close examination. We are forced to reinvent them to fit into a crazy, competitive, judgmental world. So I wrote this for anyone running through life untethered, desperate and clawing their way through murky memories, trying to get to some form of self-love. For anyone who needs reminding that a life worth living can only be born from radical honesty and the courage to shed facades and be . . . you.

Finding Me is a deep reflection, a promise, and a love letter of sorts to self. My hope is that my story will inspire you to light up your own life with creative expression and rediscover who you were before the world put a label on you.

The best celebrity memoir audiobooks are in a league of their own—there is no greater listening experience than a memoir performed by the celebrity behind the title. Their charisma and authenticity greatly enhance the experience, making it all the more engaging. Many listeners who would never think to read a celebrity memoir in print gravitate to the genre in audio. There’s something magical about hearing, in their own voice, the nitty-gritty of a star’s path.

Editor's Pick

One beautiful woman
Viola Davis and I go way back to the days she appeared on my favorite show, Law & Order. I often wondered why she wasn’t glammed up all that much. I suspected it was her dark skin that didn’t elicit glamour once upon a time. It certainly was the reason she had to run home every day, away from a pack of boys who called her names and threatened her because they found her dark and ugly. She ran fast with shoes a couple of sizes too small and holes in their soles. Viola Davis is a knockout! She’s one of the best in the business, delivering seamlessly powerful performances. At 53, she started doing the work on her scars from the past. Her therapist pointed out that the little girl from Central Falls, RI, was the hero. Viola let her in, and here she is, folks. Her memoir will put some pep in your spring. —Yvonne D., Audible Editor

I am speechless. Ms. Davis shared the story of her painful childhood while demonstrating that with God and prayer, we can overcome anything. From forgiving her father to moving beyond the color of her skin, Ms. Davis is a walking testimony to perseverance. Truly inspirational for anyone who needs to be reminded to live each day on purpose.

“Finding Me” was amazing! I lived through Viola’s life.
I’m African, born somewhat privileged and never experienced any form of racism until I came to the US.

But even when my African American friends pointed out racism to me, I just didn’t see it.

This book opened me up in a totally new way. I walked through every single chapter with Viola. I felt her joy and I felt her pain.

I’m different from my entire family. Everyone is tall, I’m short 5’2. We are all girls and my sisters are all feminine. I’m not. They all have long hair, I don’t. (I even pretended to be a boy while in school because I looked like a boy). Also I born with a prominent birth mark on my forehead which I tried to cover up.

Now in my 50’s, I love me! I love my short hair! I love my birthmark! I love my height! This amazing book has given me more confidence to be my authentic self!

I can’t thank Viola enough for sharing her life with us.

This book is a blessing!
Thank you
