About this listen

In the wake of a failed love affair, brainy beauty Jilly Lovitz takes off for Tokyo. She's expecting to cry on her sister Summer's shoulder, then spend a couple months blowing off steam in Japan. Instead, she's snatched away on the back of a motorcycle, narrowly avoiding a grisly execution attempt meant for her sister and brother-in-law.

Her rescuer is Reno, the Committee's most unpredictable agent. They'd met once before and the attraction was odd - tattooed Yakuza punk meets leggy California egghead - but electric. Now Reno and Jilly are pawns in a deadly tangle of assassination attempts, kidnappings, and prisoner swaps that could put their steamy partnership on ice.

The Fire - The book offered a lot of action! It was almost non-stop. It made for a good read on my commute. The storyline was the standard "I refuse to love you but I can't figure out how to stop it from happening" but there was enough action around the inevitable love story to keep you interested.

The Ice - The narrator was both good and marginal. The Japanese was great. It think this part of the narration added to the story. However, the narration was sometimes painful belabored (and that really does not describe it well). I wanted to have a crush on Reno but I couldn't because he oftentimes sounded so foolish in the narration. Even in that, I do not think another narrator would have added as much to the book.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I have listened to it twice already. It was fast-paced and I felt myself cheering for the main characters both in battle and in love. I even enjoyed hearing some of the elements of Japanese culture coming through in the storyline. Good read!

It was Fire and Ice...

This is my favorite of the series so far. The overall series has been fantastic but this one has been funny and exciting. Xe Sand is a great narrator as slways.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Even though I wish I would have listened to the series in order (got this book on a great sale day) it was an okay stand-alone. The setting in Japan was different, which at first I thought was going to be a problem, however, the little bit of culture described was informative. The book was somewhat predictable.

Have you listened to any of Xe Sands’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Xe Sands is one of my favorite female narrators. I was first introduced to her voice in Jacquelyn Frank's Nightwalker series. Both male and female voices are great and distinct, even when there are a lot of both within the same book. She was very good in this series as well.

Did Fire and Ice inspire you to do anything?

PRETTY GOOD !!!

Reno: “We’re not in the U.S., in case you haven’t noticed; people don’t steal property, they return it.”
Jilly: “How did you get this car?”
Reno: “I stole it.”
I like Japan. I like grumpy sunshine romance. I like Black Belt Theater. So, it wasn’t too surprising that
I liked this book, even if I found book 1 in this series to be my least favorite of all the author’s offerings.

“I don’t eat tentacles.”
Yes, Jilly was quite the ditzy American… and a nonstop damsel to boot. I just thought of her
like Joan Wilder in Romancing the Stone and embraced the sly comedy amid sexy danger.

Asian grumpy sunshine thriller

I like the story okay. but the big problem I have is with the way the characters interact. he is borderline cruel and she's a pushover

Very okay

Would you try another book from Anne Stuart and/or Xe Sands?

no

Has Fire and Ice turned you off from other books in this genre?

yes

What would have made this romance irresistible?

better plot, less foul language

Any additional comments?

This novel really was more sexual tension than any kind of plot - romance? Not really romantic, just graphic, leaving little to the imagination.

Could use a more complex plot
