About this listen

"Arresting and powerful, Flight examines the possibility and pain of fierce love and hope in our time of looming existential threats.” — Lily King, New York Times bestselling author of Writers & Lovers

"Suspenseful, dazzling and moving.” — Rumaan Alam, New York Times bestselling author of Leave the World Behind

It’s December twenty-second and siblings Henry, Kate, and Martin have converged with their spouses on Henry’s house in upstate New York. This is the first Christmas the siblings are without their mother, the first not at their mother’s Florida house. Over the course of the next three days, old resentments and instabilities arise as the siblings, with a gaggle of children afoot, attempt to perform familiar rituals, while also trying to decide what to do with their mother’s house, their sole inheritance. As tensions rise, the whole group is forced to come together unexpectedly when a local mother and daughter need help.

With the urgency and artfulness that cemented her previous novel Want as “a defining novel of our age” (Vulture), Strong once again turns her attention to the structural and systemic failings that are haunting Americans, but also to the ways in which family, friends, and strangers can support each other through the gaps. Flight is a novel of family, ambition, precarity, art, and desire, one that forms a powerful next step from a brilliant chronicler of our time.

I love the author and enjoyed this book, which gets better if you can slog through the confusing first half. There are way too many characters introduced up front and this made for a very challenging audiobook listening experience. Worthwhile if you can get through the frustrating structure.

Way too many characters

A great holiday read! Narrator was hard to follow for the first. Pulled of chapters; a voice change for each character would be an improvement. Overall, I enjoyed listening.

Slow start but really pulls you in!

I really enjoyed Flight! I love the way each character’s personality was described in such a way you can relate with each and decipher character from character. Well done, beautifully written and so intuitive. Looking forward to Lynn’s future work.

Beautiful

A wonderful and thoughtful family drama full of humanity and hope. I was sorry for it to end!

Loved it!

For a book set at the holiday and about family, there is little warmth, no humor and only one character likable enough to root for.

Also: For people triggered by infertility issues, please avoid.

A lesser version of The Family Stone

I wanted more from this story. It was a bit difficult to keep the couples straight at first. And the ending left me flat. I can’t put my finger on it, but the storyline just didn’t speak to me.

Just ok

This came highly recommended but I was disappointed with the constant switching between groups of people and not following up on events.

Disjointed

It wasn't okay story. there wasn't great character development so I didn't feel very attached to any of the characters. It felt more like a cliff notes of a book just touched on each character. It bounced around a lot sometimes. I felt like I had fallen asleep but I was listening the whole time and I missed a few things potentially. It wasn't my favorite. I didn't long to get back to hearing the book.

did I fall asleep?

Got a bit slow at times and the historical back and forth was challenging when listening at points, but really enjoyed it nonetheless!

Great Story
