About this listen

A swashbuckling triumph of storytelling, Flint and Silver provides a thrilling ride back to the rich and wondrous world of Long John Silver and his fiendish nemesis Joseph Flint in this prequel to the beloved classic Treasure Island.

John Silver had never killed a man. Until now, his charisma, sheer size and, when all else failed, powerful fists had been enough to dispatch his enemies. But on a smoldering deck off the coast of Madagascar, his shipmates dead or dying all around him, his cutlass has just claimed the lives of six pirates. Finding himself surrounded by their revenge-thirsty crewmates, Silver fears his promising merchant navy career is at an end. But then the pirate captain makes him an offer he can't refuse.

On the other side of the world, Joseph Flint, a naval officer wronged by his superiors, plots a bloody mutiny. Strikingly handsome, brilliant, but prey to sadistic tendencies, Flint is regarded as the most dangerous bandit on the high seas.

Together these gentlemen of fortune forge a deadly and unstoppable partnership, steering a course through treachery and betrayal while amassing vast treasure.

But the arrival of Selena, a beautiful runaway slave with a murderous past, and Flint's schemes to secure the pieces of gold for himself trigger a rivalry that will turn the best of friends into sworn enemies.

And so the legend of Treasure Island begins - an epic battle of wits and blades that unravels the mysteries of Robert Louis Stevenson's greatest work on the sweltering seas of the Caribbean.

I'm a pirate enthusiast

I'm a pirate enthusiast so this review might be a little biased. I enjoyed the book thoroughly. it was a bit bloody and nasty but that's how Pirates are:-)

What a surprise!

Would you consider the audio edition of Flint & Silver to be better than the print version?

Having only watched the movie version of Treasure Island, I didn't really know why I bought this audiobook but it was a real dilight from start to finish. It was a good story which seemed to follow (or preceed) what I remembered from the movie so it made me buy the original Treasure Island audiobook.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Long John Silver I remembered as a villian, but in this book he was not only a victim, but a genuine hero.

What does Tim Gregory bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

The reading was very good by Tim who seemed to be as much into the story as I was.

Who was the most memorable character of Flint & Silver and why?

The author advised that, although Treasure Island was a children's book, Flint and Silver (and the subsequent books) are aimed at adults.

Any additional comments?

I cant wait for the 2 sequels (but still prequels to Treasure Island?) to come out on audiobook. Bring It On!

Very enjoyable

I've never read Treasure Island but I did enjoy Black Sails and have read Robinson Crusoe (favorite book). I am really glad I tried this out. It's definitely a pleasure to listen to compared to many of the other books I've tried lately. I wish the whole series from this author was on here.

Fantastic Read!

This story was a wonderful blend of accurate seamanship and thrilling suspense, reminiscent of the Aubry-Maturin novels, but with more lively "pizzaz." The narrative tool of Treasure Island, with its cast of characters already known to us, only served to enrich the experience, made all the more rewarding because of the Author's rich development of those same characters. I highly recommend this, and eagerly anticipate Pieces of Eight

Gentleman of Fortune

Great job. I am glad that I'm not not the only lubber who had in interest in Captain Flint. I personally would love for John and Tim to include other pirate characters in these books like Jack Rackem, and Ann Bonny and Mary Reed, not forgetting Ned low, and Edward Teach. I enjoyed every minute of this. I will purchase the sequel. I would like to think you brethren of the sea, for the time and effort in writing this prequel. Arrrg! ~ Marc Anthony

Great idea for a story. Did a masterful job of telling it

Treasure Island was a huge part of my childhood. When I was about 10 my grandmother gave me a copy. Playing at pirates, drawing ships and characters all shaped by the book. Some 50 years later, I still enjoy the story and the nostalgia it brings. This book was a wonderful fresh look into the story. The narrator was spot on too.

where are the other two books in the series??

this was great, but it just left me hungry for the rest of, what I didn't realize until the final chapter was, the series! this was released almost ten years ago so I have to assume they aren't coming.. guess I'll have to read them the old fashioned way :/
