About this listen

Emmett Gant was planning to tell his father something really important one Sunday morning - but his father passed away first. Now, nearly three years later, Emmett can't seem to clear up who he should be with - the girl with the apple cheeks and the awesome family, or his snarky neighbor, Keegan, who never sees his family but who makes Emmett really happy just by coming over to chat.

Emmett needs clarity.

Fortunately for Emmett, his best friend's mom has a cookbook that promises to give Emmett insight and good food, and Emmett is intrigued. After the cookbook follows him home, Emmett and Keegan decide to make the recipe "For Clarity," and what ensues is both very clear - and a little surprising, especially to Emmett's girlfriend. Emmett is going to have to think hard about his past and the really important thing he forgot to tell his father if he wants to get the recipe for love just right.

Another great story from Amy Lane!

I’ve been on an Amy Lane audio binge today. 😊 I really enjoyed listening to this story. It’s part of a series but each book stands on its own and you can read them in any order. They are connected by a mysterious cookbook.

This story starts off on a sad note but it doesn’t stay that way. There were a few surprises in the story – especially for Emmett’s girlfriend Christine. Emmett’s been in the closet ever since his college roommate and boyfriend broke his heart by dumping him without warning.

Emmett and Keegan are really good together and I felt their connection. Philip Alces did a good job with the audio and I enjoyed the voices he used for the various characters.

Amy Lane always wins

Love this novella from Amy lane. Emmett and Keegan are adorable together. And the cooking piece of it made sense for these two.

Another win for the Queen of Angst!

Emmett is hiding his sexuality from his friends and families because he thinks if he finds the right girl, makes his own family, he won’t risk a broken heart – again.

Of course, Keegan is NOT down with that. He has feelings – big feelings – for Emmet, but thinks Emmett is straight… or is he?

Anyhow, when the truth is revealed and the closure … closed?... Keegan and Emmett get their HEA.

**

As usual Amy made me tear up when I read about the death of Emmett’s dad… God this was supposed to be a light sweet book! Damn you Amy (shaking fist!).

But… of course that helps us to buy into Emmett’s lies and betrayals.

I loved the cooking part and the paranormal aspect to the receiving of said book… In general I’m digging this series as a whole.

Another win for the Queen of Angst!

Audio

I don’t always love Philip Alces. Sometimes his voice fits more than others. To me, Keegan should have been more femme – I don’t know – but he was pretty gruff and to me he’s a bit more flamboyant than Bear. But… I liked Emmett and thought that the storytelling was good. Alces does a nice job with timing, emotion, and sound quality as well.

All in all 4.5 of 5 for both book and audiobook

The Revenge of the Tuxedo Cat

Any additional comments?

Tails of the Curious Cookbook is the series name for an anthology of five short stories by five great writers. The writers, R.J. Scott, Amy Lane, Marie Sexton, Amber Kell, and Mary Calmes have written vastly different M/M romance stories with the unifying theme of a curious cookbook entitled Recipes for the Heart subtitled Mystical Meals and Dangerous Desserts hand written by the anonymous Granny B. The stories come in either a Kindle e-book or audible format. The cookbook is depicted as very old, tattered, faded, leather bound, and rich with notations from its users adding clarifying notations and reactions to the varies magical recipes. The recipes when prepared and served is intended to aid in sorting out some confusing romance aspect of the stories or make one feel better after a broken heart. These books will appeal to those with a romantic soul and believe in the magic of comfort food served with a side of the power of suggestion of magic.

I have written five separate reviews for each of the five stories. Please refer to the list below when looking up the appropriate review:
1. For a Rainy Afternoon by R.J. Scott
2. Food for Thought by Amy Lane
3. Lost Along the Way by Marie Sexton
4. Cookies for Courting by Amber Kell
5. Just Desserts by Mary Calmes

Food for Thought: Tails of the Curious Cookbook by Amy Lane narrated by Philip Alaes. This story is a tale of a romantic disaster averted through the clarifying power of Granny B’s beat recipe from her magical cookbook. Emmett Gant is a man in need of a family support system. Having his heart broken from his first M/M romance he is mismatched with Christine who is equally driven to mate and establish a family for her own reasons. Everyone seems to know that Christine and Emmett is not a good match but the two of them which willfully ignore the warning signs. Emmett’s sexy next door neighbor and best buddy Keegan, who has a not so secret crush on Emmett, is eager to get Emmett to drop the I’m straight act. Even Emmett’s tuxedo cat does not like Christine.

This is a nice tale that is well narrated. The story is a little more light-hearted, farcical, and not as deeply textured as For a Raney Afternoon. However, it is well worth the time spent reading or listening to the story for its entertainment value.

such a sweet book

If you could sum up Food for Thought in three words, what would they be?

extremelly sweet story

Who was your favorite character and why?

Keegan because he was a constant and supportive presence in Emmett's life - even while they were just friends

Have you listened to any of Philip Alces’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, this was the first, but he has a hot voice and an his interpretation is amazing!!!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes!!! and I'll listen to it again!

Any additional comments?

I was a little enerved by Emmett and his "denial" in the beginning of the book, but as the story progressed, I could understand his reasons (not really accept them tho)...
Keegan was a different case... totally confident, sure of himself and head over hills in love by his neighbour and best friend.
I must confess that once Emmett finally had to assume his preferences, he did it without hesitation and without changing his mind.
A funny and sweet story
