About this listen

Dick Francis, the bestselling master of mystery and suspense, takes you into the thrilling world of horse racing.

When reporter Bert Chekov falls to his death, his colleague James Tyrone is suspicious. Chekov’s column had recently recommended some ‘can’t-lose’ horses, who then wound up out of the running on race day.

Tyrone thinks he can prove it was murder, but he may not live to tell the tale. Because as the dead man has already made clear, there’s no such thing as a sure thing...

Dick Francis never fails to build the suspense! Another great story!
From the swamps of Florida where I live, I am transported to London, England, with all its pubs and race courses, a place I may never be able to go!

I enjoyed myself tremendously listening to this book. The story is gripping, with humor and compassion. it has got it all. And the performance was very convincing! Excellent overall.

Good story and a splendid performance!

Tony Britton is NOT my favorite narrator! The story was not as good as most of Mr. Francis’ novels.

Not one of the best

The narrator is skillful and brings the story to life. The female characters are flat and predictable. The main character seems to get beat up a lot of but never seems to suffer permanent damage.
Seem like the writers heart was t really into the story.

Great narration but little flat on the story

An apology on infidelity took over a lot of the story. Not as good as his other stories.

Not as good as usual

I have read and enjoyed a large number of Dick Francis books, and this one has all the classic elements: The man who stumbles into a mystery that needs to be solved, and takes great risks to do the right thing. But the horse is barely present in this story, and the female characters are cardboard. His wife, in particular, is unnecessarily pathetic. She could have had some courage without hurting the plot, and it would have made her much more real. Still, a mostly fun read.

Not Francis’ Best

Story line was disappointing, author is reaching for something , but never quite achieves. Characters were trying to be moral, in an immoral way.

Not up to par.
