About this listen

The Norseman Eyvind, a fierce and loyal Wolfskin, came to a new land on top of the world to find his destiny. With his priestess bride, Nessa, he saved the land and weathered the treachery that was caused by Eyvind's blood-sworn friend Somerled. After much pain and sorrow, the two lovers have managed to create a society where the Norse warriors and the gentle folks of the Orkney Isles live and thrive in contentment at last. A decade and more has passed since the devastating events of the creation of the settlement, and Eyvind and Nessa have watched their children grow and thrive in peace.

But not all on the islands are content or at peace. Thorvald, the young son of Margaret, widow of the slain king and Eyvind's war leader, has always felt apart and at odds with all he knows. He learns upon his coming to manhood he is not his father's son, but that of the love Margaret bore for the hated Somerled, and that Somerled was not killed for his treachery but sent on a boat, adrift with little more than a knife and skein of water, doomed to the gods' will.

Thorvald is determined to find a boat and cast off to the West in a desperate bid to find a father he never knew...and to find out if he is made of the same stuff as the heinous traitor.

The tragedy of this scheme would be horrific enough...if it were not for the fact that Creidhe, the winsome daughter of Eyvind and Nessa, has loved Thorvald since birth and, unbeknownst to him, conspires to go along on this most perilous of quests.

What happens to them on their journey of discovery will ultimately change the lives of all they know and love...and will doom (or redeem) an entire people.

Hoping for a Book 3!

I read Wolfskin and thought it was a bit grim so didn’t rush to the sequel. But when I’m in need of escape with a proven author I reach for Ms. Marillier’s work. This one was slow starting for me and hard to get into, but I’m very glad I kept going. Loved what she did with every character- no loose ends- and a story with plot twists that engaged me. So much so that I’m extremely disappointed she didn’t continue the series. But the issues of the Light Isles are largely resolved so I suppose I’m just being greedy!

A lovely and unique story

The story is full of love, adventure, strife, and romance - although not the SJM style. A great listen.

So good! I didn't want it to end.

As usual, JM really brings the story to the perfect close, but I was not ready for it to be over.

Satisfies the craving for Juliet Marillier’s storytelling

My favorite series of all of JM’s book is the series that begins with Daughter of the Forest- I’ve read them more than once! But I enjoyed Wolfskin, then Foxmask very much; in fact, all day the characters of Foxmask Lee drifting into my thoughts, and I wish I hadn’t finished the book. There’s a subtle magic that flows throughout the books- not so much like books about Dragons, or Wizards, which I also like, but these books give the characters more depth , with th ability to change throughout their lives. It’s one of the reasons I love her books. Although you might be able to read Foxmask without reading Wolfskin, you would lose a lot of the story and “feel” of the books- read them in order.

I loved this rich tale and the narration!

I was mesmerized by this fascinating story. The characters were deep and I enjoyed listening to their different journeys. The narration was flawless and I thoroughly enjoyed the soothing voice and well thought out character voices. I definitely recommend this as a follow-up to the Wolfskin prequel story.

such good story telling!

Both books in this series are stories that will stay with me. It's a weaving of two truths that people and circumstance can change. Well done.
