A perfect being who is not human...

Set free upon the death of his maker, Adamis begins a life he has never imagined nor trained for.

Stunningly handsome and nearly impossible to detect as an android by the human eye, he has been told to stay away from any medical facility and never to submit to bloodwork or DNA testing so that his secret will remain safe. Armed with his maker’s research notes and special unpatented enhancements he has yet learned to use, he sets upon a journey of self-discovery and learning, growing into the near-perfect being he was intended to be.

On day one of his new life, he is presented a problem. He rescues a human woman left for dead.

“You want her? Here, I give her to you!” her abuser tells him.

How will he reconcile his own freedom with this new wrinkle—being given a human woman to own?

And what happens next as he begins to heal her, when she falls in love with him?

Book one of a brand-new futuristic sci-fi series by New York Times best-selling author Sharon Hamilton, writing as S. Hamil.

interesting

An interesting twist on AI-human romance, original and intriguing.
Adamis was made to be a protector, to help humanity. His maker Darius gave him a strong sense of right and wrong, teaching him and giving him the tools to accomplish his prime directive. His first 'save' is Emmy, with whom he experiences many 'firsts'. They embark on an adventure and their mission, with the help of the newly born network, is to save those who believe in the freedom of humanity and get rid of those who would jeopardize that. What a surprise at the end. Loved it!

JD Hart gave an excellent auditory experience, bringing the characters 'alive' and making the story real. The characters got their own voice and temperament which made it easy to follow the story.

Looking forward to more in this new series. I want to know what happens next.

Loved It

I really enjoyed this book. I've listened to one other book (it was a 4-book bundle) by this author about guardian angels and enjoyed it. But I have a fairly newfound weakness for android romance and was excited to see the world S Hamil would create. I loved android Adamis from the start. He was sweet and kind and so innocently curious and appreciative of even mundane things around him. But one day his creator tells him he is dying, and set him up to secretly be free instead of destroyed. He has all his makers notes, and although having been taught to be curious and learn experiences, he no longer has his maker to fall back on for guidance and advice. When he finds a man beating a prostitute in an ally and steps in to help her, he finds himself given the woman instead. Bringing her safely into his home, he now has to help her heal- both physically and emotionally after having suffered terrible abuse- all while keeping the fact he isn't human a secret, and having almost no experience with women. I thought this was a sweet and intriguing story. I also liked Emmy- the woman he saved. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.

I listened to this audiobook narrated by JD Hart. I thought he did a wonderful job with his narration of the different characters' voices. I liked the pacing, and I also found his tone quite soothing at times.

Becoming Human . . .

This story line gets kudos for originality and the opportunity for us to be introspective as we are reminded about what it means to be human. Our main character is Adamis Jefferson who is launched into a jumble of life experiences he is not really prepared for. His deceased maker Darius was so good for him, having him question things and providing answers or guidance. He set him on the path which he now must follow through his own decisions. Being offered a terribly abused woman whom the abuser has cruelly beaten, Adamis must find a way to heal Emmy’s wounds, both the physical ones and the insidious damage that abusers do to their victims when trust and self-esteem is destroyed. Can Adamis make her feel safe again? Can he help her regain confidence? And will he be learning also as the two of them venture into a unique experience? You will find this audiobook enhances your “reading” experience through the skillful narrator, JD Hart. He does a great job with the voices to personalize the story and make it easy for the listener to get an accurate impression of what each character is like. It helps to set the mood, familiarize the characters, and offers a pleasant way to “read” and enjoy the book.

Android love

Excellent story, it kept me engaged to the very end. The idea is intriguing and makes me want to read more on along this line. Just want is “human”? At what point is an android “alive”? Adamis and Emmy fall for each other. One happens to be human and the other android. The android has more positive human characteristics than many humans do. Be careful, trust no one, because only the DNA can say if it is an android or human. Now, add in a corrupt government which wants to control everything, and wipe out the intelligent androids. I am looking forward to the next book in the series! The narration was very well done. I received a free copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving my review.

Well-Written Dystopian AI Romance

I've read or listened to several books by this author, mostly her military romances but one by this pen name. This story certainly has parallels with her military stories, but it is set in a near-future dystopian United States where change—and not the good kind—is about to smash the world as it was before. The hero is actually an android, one lovingly constructed by his maker to be a protector. He's charmingly naïve in some ways, though he dedicates most of his day to learning, but in other ways, he is delightfully complex. Being designed to protect, he has a strong sense of right and wrong and is surprisingly intuitive toward victims and the underserved. His romance with a "lady of the night" whom he rescued from near-certain death is heartfelt and sweet, and their moments together added some lightness to what could have otherwise been a heavy book The book takes place in the San Francisco Bay Area, a place I'm very familiar with as I grew up there and lived there for the first 40 years of my life. I recognized many places she talked about or went to, which certainly brought back memories! A lot goes down in this book, and this is the start of a three- or four-book series, I believe. So, this book lays the groundwork for the upcoming stories. I wouldn't say it necessarily ends on a cliffhanger, but the world is just starting to fracture as we get a glimpse of the new normal the other books will surely address ... and what is behind it. The author did a fantastic job portraying the abject terror the characters had to be feeling as their world suddenly (metaphorically) shifts on its axis, and they don't know who they can trust or how everything will shake out. Yes, things go crazy at the end of the book—and this part had me literally sitting at attention while I listened!--but the author laid the groundwork well so it didn't feel as though it came out of nowhere. There's a delicious twist at the end I didn't see coming—I love it when authors surprise me. I'm a voracious reader, so it's difficult to surprise me! If you enjoy well-written dystopian stories with android romance, this is exceedingly well-done. Recommended.
