Publisher's summary

A captivating story detailing how resilience and inner strength can be combined to overcome mountainous barriers to reach one’s full potential.

Growing up in Ferguson, Missouri, Stanley Andrisse began making poor decisions at a very young age. He started selling dope and was arrested for the first time at 14 years old. By his early 20s, dope dealing had exponentially multiplied, and he found himself sitting in front of a judge facing 20 years to life on drug-trafficking charges. The judge sentenced him to 10 years in a maximum-security prison.

Prison was an experience like none other he’d ever encountered. While challenged with a strong desire for self-renewal, he faced an environment that was not conducive for transformative change. From poor institutional structure and policies to individual institutionalized thinking and behaviors, he battled on a daily basis to retain and maintain his humanity.

Upon release, and after several rejections, Stanley was accepted into a PhD program. He completed his PhD/MBA simultaneously and became an endocrinologist and impactful leader at Johns Hopkins Medicine, specializing in diabetes research.

Excellent

Such an excellent book and definitely makes you look at the formerly incarcerated in a whole new light. Mr. Andrisse does not sugar coat his past convictions or the trials he faced during and post incarceration. A personal bonus for me was growing up in St. Louis and being able to relate on another level.

I have been recommending this book to everyone. We are mentoring a group of young men and will leverage aspects of this content.

The realities of getting to the American dream- the pathway of horror when labelled.

The audio book that I used is a powerful narration by the author, Dr, Andrisse of his own arduous struggles fighting his inner devils along with combating the specially installed evil systems that are still in place in our racially discriminative society. It was as thrilling as watching a tennis match between Federer and Nadal.
This analogy may sound frivolous, but as a Nadal fan I see the entire stadium cheering Federer at any chance they get, but, Nadal usually is focused on his own game plan to win and yet be sympathetic and compassionate towards his opponents. At other times it is resounding testimony of many African American teens and young black men and their predicaments.

Powerful, enlightened truth telling

Beyond grateful that Dr. Andrisse shared his complete, honest truth. Hearing some of the disturbing dehumanization experiences was difficult but necessary. With an incarcerated loved one who, after overcoming numerous obstacles is currently taking college level correspondence courses, this story resonates deeply. Thank you!
