Publisher's summary

The next charming mystery from Carolyn Haines featuring spunky southern private investigator Sarah Booth Delaney.

Dr. Frank Hafner is an archaeologist working on excavating a new-found Native American temple site in the Mississippi Delta. He's also too handsome for his own good, and a bit of a flirt. Oddly enough, it's the first quality that gets him in trouble when he discovers the ritualistic murder of one of his archaeological crew. When Coleman Peters, Sheriff and Sarah Booth's boyfriend, takes Dr. Hafner in for questioning in the murder, the accused doctor hires Sarah Booth to clear his name. Soon, Sarah Booth has uncovered a number of possible suspects, but she can't narrow them down fast enough to stem the continuing violence that seems to trace back to Dr. Hafner's dig.

When Peter Deerstalker, a member of the Tunica tribe, mentions a curse, it doesn't seem so far-fetched - especially when a young graduate student on the site claims someone on the site is searching for something much more precious than ancient pottery....

Something spooky is going on in the Mississippi Delta, and though Sarah Booth isn't sure who to trust, or what to believe, she knows she won't rest until she's dug up the truth.

One of Carolyn Haines' better books in this series

I often figure a book out right away, and while some elements were easy to guess overall the author managed to keep me guessing through to the end.

Good but characters’ voices not right

I’ve listened to all the other books, and the narrator isn’t perfect but has been very good. In this book, she frequently used the wrong voice for whichever character was speaking. For example, several times she used tinky’s voice when Sarah booth was speaking. It was very distracting.

Narrator

Loved the story. Carolyn Haines is one of my favorite authors! The narrator did a great job but her voice is a little old for Sarah Booth and various other characters. They’re supposed to be in their mid-30’s and the narrator is clearly older than that. Also, as a native Mississippian, the word “Biloxi” is said bih-lux-ee, not the way the narrator pronounced it.

Increasing incidence of errors

In the last few books there have been more and more errors - incorrect names or incorrect attributions of dialogue- it is starting to get distracting

The ending - wow

Archaeology - what could be better? This book has
it all. Lots of interesting characters from the many books in the series add to our interest. Then we have an off bunch of people
playing Mystery Guest line up with some very odd and scary lines of inquiry. i was
scared as the end of the book loomed wrapped up in blankets with a warm dog.
Good better best.
