Publisher's summary

Gary Player's Black Book contains 50 questions and detailed responses from 18-time major winner Gary Player. The book, divided into three parts, focuses on specific scenarios and problems that arise in golf, life, and business. In the first section on golf, topics include putting, scoring, etiquette, the mental side of the game, and fitness and nutrition. In the section on life, Player, the father of six and grandfather to 22, addresses issues such as parenting, who to turn to when in need of advice, and more. Finally, in the section on business, he details how to deal with competition, among other topics. Player responds to questions such as:

  • Golf: How do I play a bunker shot from a plugged lie?
  • Life: I feel like I've lost the passion for what I do. How do I get that back?
  • Business: When people criticize my work, I take it very personally. How do you handle criticism?

Player draws from both on- and off-the-course experiences dealing with competitors, businesspeople, and family. In doing so he offers a unique glimpse into handling adversity with regard to these relationships. The advice that he offers is invaluable to fans of all ages.

How to live life, with a little on golf mixed in

If you want to explore Gary players philosophy on life, hear his stories and learn about golf, a little bit, you picked an excellent audiobook.

I highly recommend this book unless you’re looking to play the game like Gary with specific technical tips. If you listen carefully you might hear the ups and downs of calming your mind on the golf course and in the business world.

You will get many specific and useful philosophical tips, plus things that have helped him over many decades of golf. I especially like hearing the stories from the 50s and the 60s that he helps me see as if it was yesterday.

The sections on how Gary Player helped South Africa through difficult transitions impressed me. It is hard to make good choices even when you know you’re right.

I especially liked that the book was read by someone who has a similar South African accent and can add that little extra bit of detail.

Gary Player is a legend

Wonderful book and it is as detailed as Gary. I learned a lot from him when listening to it. He is one the inspirational men that I would love to meet one day before heaven.

Review

The first part of the audible book was good. Then it got into a business 101 story line that was very boring. Then it proceeded to tell how golf got political which I don’t care about. Not a great audible book for me.
