Story
When Lane Fielding fled her isolated Florida hometown after high school for the anonymity of New York City, she swore she'd never return. But 20 years later, newly divorced and with two daughters in tow, she finds herself tending bar at the local dive and living with her parents on the historic Fielding Plantation. Here, the past haunts her and the sinister crimes of her father make her as unwelcome in town as she was the day she left. Ostracized by the people she was taught to trust, Lane's unsteady truce with the town is rattled when her older daughter suddenly vanishes.

Publisher's summary
“A riveting, astonishing, and flat-out gorgeous debut.” (Nina de Gramont, author of The Christie Affair)
A mesmerizing and suspenseful coming-of-age novel about an orphan hiding within the walls of her former family home - and about what it means to be truly seen after becoming lost in life
Eventually, every hidden thing is found.
Elise knows every inch of the house. She knows which boards will creak. She knows where the gaps are in the walls. She knows which parts can take her in, hide her away. It’s home, after all. The home her parents made for her, before they were taken from her in a car crash. And home is where you stay, no matter what.
Eddie is a teenager trying to forget about the girl he sometimes sees out of the corner of his eye. But when his hotheaded older brother senses her, too, they are faced with the question of how to get rid of someone they aren’t sure even exists. And as they try to cast her out, they unwittingly bring an unexpected and far more real threat to their doorstep.
Written with grace and enormous heart, Girl in the Walls is a novel about carrying on through grief, forging unconventional friendships, and realizing, little by little, that we don’t need to fear what we do not understand.

Story
I’m an occultist living in a haunted brownstone in upstate New York. The building is a ghostly double-image of itself, like a picture painted brightly over an older, weirder picture. It’s an equinox place, my mother once said, where dark and light things are equally in power. I want to tell you, dear strangers, why I was there and what I found.

In 1995, six university students moved into the house at 215 Caldwell Street. Months later, one of them was found dead on the sofa the morning after their end-of-year party. His death was ruled an accident by the police. The remaining five all knew it wasn’t, and though they went on with their lives, the truth of what happened to their sixth housemate couldn’t stay buried forever. Twenty years later, all five of them arrive - lured separately under various pretenses - at Wolfheather House, a crumbling, secluded mansion on the Scottish isle of Doon.

Amy Harney has a job as a chambermaid for the summer, but on August 25, she will take the exam to become an EMT (third time’s the charm!) and finally move on with her life. In the meantime, she doesn’t mind scrubbing toilets immaculately clean or tucking the sheet corners just so. In fact, she tells herself that her work is a noble act of service to the rich guests at the yacht club. Amy’s profound isolation colors everything: her job, her aspirations, even her interactions with the woman at the deli counter.

This is a wonderful, beautifully written book! It is real, yet surreal; frightening yet comforting! I’ve never read anything quite like it! It brings the reader in, little by little until one is connecting with the Girl in a powerful way. Story of an orphan girl returning to her original home and living in the walls unknown by the new family—-until——

Loved this book!!
I first read this book in hardback version and loved it so much I wanted to listen again on Audible. The audiobook format does it justice, as does the wonderful reader. Girl in the Walls is captivating as the story builds and we grow to empathize with and cheer on this little girl who has come to live in the walls of her former home after a family tragedy. The writing is absolutely beautiful in its literary fiction style. When the action explodes, make time for a long run or road trip, because you won’t want to stop listening! Highly recommend!
