About this listen

After posting a negative review of a horror novel, a woman staying at an isolated beach house begins to wonder if the author is a little touchy—or very, very dangerous—in this pulse-pounding novel of psychological suspense and terror from the critically acclaimed author of No Exit and Hairpin Bridge.

Emma Carpenter lives in isolation with her golden retriever Laika, house-sitting an old beachfront home on the rainy Washington coast. Her only human contact is her enigmatic old neighbor, Deek, and (via text) the house’s owner, Jules.

One day, she reads a poorly written—but gruesome—horror novel by the author H. G. Kane, and posts a one-star review that drags her into an online argument with none other than the author himself. Soon after, disturbing incidents start to occur at night. To Emma, this can’t just be a coincidence. It was strange enough for this author to bicker with her online about a lousy review; could he be stalking her, too?

As Emma digs into Kane’s life and work, she learns he has published sixteen other novels, all similarly sadistic tales of stalking and murder. But who is he? How did he find her? And what else is he capable of?

Displaying his trademark command of rapid-fire pacing, unnerving atmosphere, and razor-sharp characterization, Taylor Adams once again delivers a diabolically disturbing—and deadly—game of cat and mouse.

A Great Thriller

This book is amazing and so is the performance. You’ll never predict all the turns. Please go read. You won’t regret it.

Another banger from this author

This one is for the book lovers and reviewers! We will think twice next time we leave a bad review.

An author with a fragile ego loses what was left of his mind when Emma gives his new book its first review; and it's a scathing one.

He's decided he wants to see if Emma can do better than his previous (fictional?) victims. He knows so many platitudes and adages but I guess no one told him the one about people with little to lose..

Who will get the last word?

SHEESH

Wowza. This book put me through the ringer in the best way possible. I was on the edge of my seat from the second our main character Emma one starred a really crappy book. This book is the first book I have read by this author and I must say I am thoroughly impressed. Wow. I definitely plan on picking up any novels she writes in the future.

Fun listen/read

Don’t overthink it like some reviewers. Some books just need to be fun twisty thrillers and this was a fun easy read all the way through.

Not one to miss

The beginning was a bit confusing and I didn’t think this was for me; it seemed silly. Fortunately I kept listening, then it was engaging, if not not gripping. I rarely write a review- The Last Word I heartily recommend. Hope there are more by Taylor Adams.

Great Suspense

There are so many twists in this story but it just adds to the angst and suspense. Character development is so well done. Emma truly is the definition of a heroine!

Narration was excellent by both narrators!!

Really liked this book.

So I will say that I have every book written by this author. I always enjoy his books. No exit is still my favorite though. It’s a great read and as always keeps you guessing as to what’s going to happen next.
