About this listen

With the same engaging style and dry humor that makes the Podictionary podcast popular, Hodgson traces the development of our language using easily recognizable milestones, such as Beowulf, William the Conqueror, Chaucer, and Shakespeare, with a minimum of dates and dry facts.

Instead, the story is punctuated with anecdotes about why these characters are so memorable, as well as interesting details on how we know what we know and the conditions of life over the years, as they affected the growth of our language.

A fun romp through the history of the language

This was a fun listen for my morning walk. Just an hour and fifteen minutes long, it makes no pretense of being a scholarly work. If you've studied the history of the language in depth, there's not really anything new here. But Hodgson has a good eye for interesting details that make this an entertaining piece.

fun and easy listening

This is a pleasant listen for a layman's understanding of the history of English. The author's podcast, Podictionary, is also very good.
