About this listen

The first in a vivid and charming crime series set in the Louisiana bayou, introducing the hilariously uncensored amateur sleuth Glory Broussard. Perfect for fans of Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club.

It’s a hot and sticky Sunday in Lafayette, Louisiana, and Glory has settled into her usual after-church routine, meeting gamblers at the local coffee shop, where she works as a small-time bookie. Sitting at her corner table, Glory hears that her best friend—a nun beloved by the community—has been found dead in her apartment.

When the police declare the mysterious death a suicide, Glory is convinced that there must be more to the story and, with her reluctant daughter, with troubles of her own, in tow, launches a shadow investigation in a town of oil tycoons, church gossips, and a rumored voodoo priestess.

As a Black woman of a certain age who grew up in a segregated Louisiana, Glory is used to being minimized and overlooked. But she’s determined to make her presence known as the case leads her deep into a web of intrigue she never realized Lafayette could harbor. Danielle Arcenaux’s riveting debut brings for an unforgettable character that will charm and delight crime fans everywhere and leave them hungry for her next adventure.

This is a great start to a new series. The performance could not be better.

I loved getting to know Glory through this first book in the series. I found myself laughing out loud at times. Story was engaging and well developed. Kept me guessing all the way through.

Miss Glory cracked me up from start to finish. We all know someone like her. I’m looking forward to her sleuthing and fussing at people for years to come! And, of course, Ms. Bahni Turpin brings her to life terrifically!

Hilarious cozy mystery

I absolutely loved this book but characters are so authentic. I felt like I knew each one of them. So funny and sometimes a little sad. It felt like real life. I'll definitely check out the series.

Authentic

I don't write many reviews. I find it takes time away from reading. But this book deserves a review. Glory B is by far the best book I read in 2023. I simply cannot wait to read another Glory book. Or any book by this author. Glory is a perfect character. She is a truly good person who has been on this earth enough years to be disappointed by people over and over again, and it has turned her, as disappointment invariably will, into a bitter woman who sometimes wants to just hide under the covers. The raw truthfulness of how the author shows us Glory is what makes her perfect. Other than our sex and our age, Glory and I have very little in common. I am an older white woman who grew up in a large Midwestern city, while she is an older black woman from southern Louisiana. I have no religious background, which in the Midwest simply means Baptist by Default, while Glory is a (somewhat) staunch Catholic. I should actually struggle to relate to this character. Instead, I long to sit in the shade of a large tree and drink iced tea with her, and talk about all the ways folks have disappointed me too. I want to help Glory solve her next mystery. I want to be her friend. Like I said, she's the perfect character.

Best book I read this year!

Too much time spent on establishing the quirky nature of the heroine to get you ready for the sequel and not enough time on the actual mystery. I see no need to continue to the series.

Just okay. Predictable.

This book was well-written and full of humor. Glory was quite a stinker, yet likeable. The story was down to earth and easy to follow

I love a detective series that really gives a sense of place. This book does that for Lafayette, LA.
