About this listen

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!

“This Golden Girls meets James Bond thriller is a journey you want to be part of.”—Buzzfeed

Older women often feel invisible, but sometimes that’s their secret weapon.

They’ve spent their lives as the deadliest assassins in a clandestine international organization, but now that they're 60 years old, four women friends can’t just retire—it’s kill or be killed in this action-packed thriller by New York Times best-selling and Edgar Award-nominated author Deanna Raybourn.

Billie, Mary Alice, Helen, and Natalie have worked for the Museum, an elite network of assassins, for 40 years. Now their talents are considered old-school and no one appreciates what they have to offer in an age that relies more on technology than people skills.

When the foursome is sent on an all-expenses paid vacation to mark their retirement, they are targeted by one of their own. Only the Board, the top-level members of the Museum, can order the termination of field agents, and the women realize they’ve been marked for death.

Now to get out alive they have to turn against their own organization, relying on experience and each other to get the job done, knowing that working together is the secret to their survival. They’re about to teach the Board what it really means to be a woman—and a killer—of a certain age.

Critic reviews

“[An] unpredictable and propulsive romp of a thriller…an inventive and distinctly feminist escapade.”—Oprah Daily

“A singular suspense story thanks to its deftly fluctuating tone, which is by turns comical, violent and unexpectedly affecting…it’s impossible not to root for these dangerous dames and their refusal to let themselves be put on the ash heap—a phrase that, in this thriller, should be taken literally.”—The Washington Post

“A sharp and witty thriller.”—PopSugar

Well done! I binge-listened within a day… and I know I’ll be enjoying it again in near future. It’s that good.

Wow! Just Wow

This story about senior citizen assassins was a lot of fun to listen to. I suggest next time using an older-sounding voice for the narration. The narrator's voice didn't match the characters, which was distracting. The story was fun to imagine but a little too over the top at times. The characters were interesting. I enjoyed the backstory intertwined with the plot.

Fun idea

While I would have liked a slightly faster pace, this was an entertaining listen. It reminded me of the movie R.E.D., but not quite as B movie cheesy. As a retiree myself, I had no issues with the portrayal of the elder assassins. I was mildly annoyed by the constant refrains of women stuck in a man’s world. Overall, however, this was an engaging listen.

Random thoughts: This was closer to Gross Point Blank than John Wick on the violence scale. Any sex, religion or politics was of the indirect and fade to black variety. The story is partially told with flashbacks, but the current day versus past is narrated in first versus second person, making it easy to distinguish.
I thought the narrators were outstanding, especially considering the number of women featured.

Fine with the ageism, bit heavy on the sexism

A fun, female empowering read. Loved the current day reader. The woman reading the story in the past was a bit annoying. Very much held my attention and I couldn’t wait to hear what happened next

Loved it

I really do wish this was a series because I love the characters and the stories. This was my first Rayburn book, and I was very pleasantly surprised as it was a random grab. I noticed most of the other books are historical fiction which I am going to try, but I would say also that this is a great genre for her as well.

I wish this was a series.

Good story and good performance. Very woman power oriented. I enjoyed it! Not very suspenseful but a good mystery. Worth a credit for sure.

Fun listen!

Very well written and entertaining, and seemingly educational as well. The story instantly pulls you in and keeps you involved the entire time.

Great Story!

Great plot … not a predictable story … a little graphic but the author doesn’t dwell on that.

Terrific Read!

Deanna Raybourn has been a favorite author for a long time and I look forward to her next book.

Women of a certain age can still get things done and should never be underestimated.
