About this listen

Some of the classic collection of Lady Gregory's translations of the Irish stories of Finn McCool.

Lady Gregory's translation of these old Irish stories was described by the poet W. B. Yeats as "the best book that has come out of Ireland in my time." It contains translations by Lady Gregory of medieval manuscript versions of myths and legends drawn from a pre-historic oral tradition that still survives today. This adaptation for audio allows the listener to experience some of these stories through the spoken voice, as when they were first told by country people and in the courts of kings.

Reader Felicity Hays-McCoy is an Irish writer and actress whose knowledge and love of these stories goes back to her childhood, when she first heard them in the Irish language.

Critic reviews

"Felicity Hays-McCoy's reading is brisk, matter-of-fact, business like. 'So now,' she says, 'here's how it happened...' I love it. You almost expect her to add 'and don't be tormenting me with questions.' We wouldn't, there's no need. Once you're there with the Fianna, fighting, feasting, chasing enchanted pigs, meeting princesses as dazzling as Niamh, you just listen and marvel. And want more." (Sue Arnold, the Guardian)

Short but sweet

This lore could be expanded and made in to a film. Perhaps combined with later history or an Ancient Alien theme. Or both.

Please Do An Unabridged Version

Seriously. I would like more of this. This is only a few selections from Lady Gregory's work. Is there no interest in a bigger version? It has to be public domain. Throw up a Kickstarter. You can borrow my copy. I'll pre-order. What do I gotta do?
