About this listen
As a young man, Joseph Goebbels was a budding narcissist with a constant need of approval. Through political involvement he found personal affirmation within the German National Socialist Party. In this comprehensive volume, Peter Longerich documents Goebbels' descent into anti-Semitism and ideology and ascent through the ranks of the Nazi party, where he became an integral member of Hitler's inner circle and where he shaped a brutal campaign of Nazi propaganda.
In life and in his grisly family suicide, Goebbels was one of Hitler's most loyal acolytes. Though powerful in the party and in wartime Germany, Longerich's Goebbels is a man dogged by insecurities and consumed by his fierce adherence to the Nazi cause. Longerich engages and challenges the careful self-portrait that Goebbels left behind in his diaries, and, as he delves deep into the mind of Hitler's master propagandist, Longerich discovers firsthand how the Nazi message was conceived. This complete portrait of the man behind the message is sure to become a standard for historians and students of the Holocaust for years to come.

Story
Heinrich Himmler was an unremarkable-looking man. Yet he was Hitler's top enforcer, in charge of the Gestapo, the SS, and the so-called Final Solution. We can only wonder, as Peter Longerich asks, how such a banal personality could attain such a historically unique position of power. How could the son of a prosperous Bavarian Catholic public servant become the organizer of a system of mass murder spanning the whole of Europe? In the first comprehensive biography of this murderous enigma, Longerich answers those questions with a superb account of Himmler's inner self and outward acts.

Story
Authors Roger Manvell and Heinrich Fraenkel, notable biographers of the World War II German leaders Joseph Goebbels and Herman Goring, delve into the life of one of the most sinister, clever, and successful of all the Nazi leaders: Heinrich Himmler. As the head of the feared SS, Himler supervised the extermination of millions. Here is the story of how a seemingly ordinary boy grew into an obsessive and superstitious man who ventured into herbalism, astrology, and homeopathic medicine before finally turning to the “science” of racial purity and the belief in the superiority of the Aryan people.

The Nuremberg Interviews reveals the chilling innermost thoughts of the former Nazi officials under indictment at the famous postwar trial. The architects of one of history’s greatest atrocities speak out about their lives, their careers in the Nazi Party, and their views on the Holocaust. Their reflections are recorded in a set of interviews conducted by a US Army psychiatrist. Dr. Leon Goldensohn was entrusted with monitoring the mental health of the two dozen German leaders charged with carrying out genocide, as well as that of many of the defense and prosecution witnesses.

This masterful biography by one of Germany’s best known journalists was the leading nonfiction best seller in Germany. Fest shows Hitler as the receptacle of the dreads and resentments of a shaken social order, gifted with an uncanny instinct for all that was hollow behind the appearance of power, at home and abroad. Though a warped human being, he was neither clown nor puppet, as many liked to think; Hitler appears here as an enormously astute politician, impressing and hypnotizing Germans and foreigners alike with the scope of his projects and the theatricality of their presentation. Fest uncovers in Hitler a constantly destructive personality....

After rising through the ranks of the German army, Hermann Goering became Hitler's right hand man and was hand-picked to head the Luftwaffe, one of history's most feared fighting forces. As he rose in power, though, Goering became disillusioned and was eventually shunned from Hitler's inner circle.

Story
Understanding Adolf Hitler's ideology provides insights into the mental world of an extremist politics that, over the course of the Third Reich, developed explosive energies culminating in the Second World War and the Holocaust. Too often the theories underlying National Socialism or Nazism are dismissed as an irrational hodgepodge of ideas. Yet that ideology drove Hitler's quest for power in 1933, colored everything in the Third Reich, and transformed him, however briefly, into the most powerful leader in the world.

Countless books have been written about why Nazi Germany lost World War II, yet remarkably little attention has been paid to the equally vital question of how and why it was able to hold out as long as it did.

When Japan attacked the United States in 1941, argues Eri Hotta, its leaders, in large part, understood they were entering a conflict they were bound to lose. Availing herself of rarely consulted material, Hotta poses essential questions overlooked by historians in the seventy years since: Why did these men - military men, civilian politicians, diplomats, the emperor - put their country and its citizens in harm's way? Why did they make a decision that was doomed from the start?

Story
In Becoming Hitler, award-winning historian Thomas Weber examines Adolf Hitler's time in Munich between 1918 and 1926, the years when Hitler shed his awkward, feckless persona and transformed himself into a savvy opportunistic political operator who saw himself as Germany's messiah. The story of Hitler's transformation is one of a fateful match between man and city. After opportunistically fluctuating between the ideas of the left and the right, Hitler emerged as an astonishingly flexible leader of Munich's right-wing movement.

Story

Story
On Christmas, 1991, President George H. W. Bush addressed the nation to declare an American victory in the Cold War: Earlier that day Mikhail Gorbachev had resigned as the first and last Soviet president. The enshrining of that narrative, one in which the end of the Cold War was linked to the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the triumph of democratic values over communism, took center stage in American public discourse immediately after Bush's speech and has persisted for decades. As Serhii Plokhy reveals, the collapse of the Soviet Union was anything but the handiwork of the US.

No American statesman has been as revered and as reviled as Henry Kissinger. Once hailed as "Super-K" - the "indispensable man" whose advice has been sought by every president from Kennedy to Obama - he has also been hounded by conspiracy theorists, scouring his every "telcon" for evidence of Machiavellian malfeasance. Yet as Niall Ferguson shows in this magisterial biography, the idea of Kissinger as the ruthless arch-realist is based on a profound misunderstanding.

From 1934 until 1944, Mussolini met Hitler numerous times, and the two developed a relationship that deeply affected both countries. While Germany is generally regarded as the senior power, Christian Goeschel demonstrates just how much history has underrepresented Mussolini's influence on his German ally. Goeschel, a scholar of 20th-century Germany and Italy, revisits all of Mussolini and Hitler's key meetings and asks how these meetings constructed a powerful image of a strong Fascist-Nazi relationship that still resonates with the general public.

No leader of modern times was more uniquely patriotic than Charles de Gaulle. As founder and first president of the Fifth Republic, General de Gaulle saw himself as "carrying France on [his] shoulders." In his 20s, he fought for France in the trenches and at the epic battle of Verdun. In the 1930s, he waged a lonely battle to enable France to better resist Hitler's Germany. Thereafter, he twice rescued the nation from defeat and decline by extraordinary displays of leadership, political acumen, daring, and bluff, heading off civil war and leaving a heritage adopted by his successors of right and left.

Few, if any, 20th-century political leaders have enjoyed greater popularity among their own people than Hitler did in the decade or so following his rise to power in 1933. The personality of Hitler himself, however, can scarcely explain this immense popularity or his political effectiveness in the 1930s and '40s. His hold over the German people lay rather in the hopes and perceptions of the millions who adored him. Based largely on the reports of government officials, party agencies, and political opponents, Kershaw's study charts the creation, growth, and decline of the Hitler myth.

Charles Stewart Henry Vane-Tempest-Stewart, the 7th Marquess of Londonderry, was born to power and command. But history has not been kind to "Charley", as the king called him, because, in his own words, he "backed the wrong horse", and a very dark horse indeed: Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party. Londonderry was hardly the only British aristocrat to do so, but he was the only Cabinet member to do so, and it ruined him. Great study of a truly sick man
I've read several tomes on Nazi Germany. This is definitely a valuable contribution to the analysis of how a civilized nation could succumb to murderous fanatics. The author probes Goebbels' diaries in parallel with news reports, other historical documents and more to try to understand how Goebbels, head of propaganda, could become what he became and do what he did.

An intimate account
A thorough analysis of the propaganda minister and his relationships. First, about the narration, it is blissfully free from the common mispronunciations that plague most Third Reich audiobooks. Prebble does a wonderful job. This chronicle explores the actions and literary leavings of Goebbels and is so full of direct references that it threatens to be an autobiography. This is expertly balanced by simultaneous reports from other viewpoints that reveal insights that would be lost were one to only read Goebbels’ documents alone. I believe that this book represents real historical scholarship and would be overwhelming had the author less skill. I feel that even a novice to the period would come away with a clear understanding of the man and his time. Highly recommended.

A picture of one of Hitler's most loyal supporters
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would for the history.
What other book might you compare Goebbels: A Biography to and why?
It is just as good, no, better then the 3 volume biography on Hitler.
Have you listened to any of Simon Prebble’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have. One of his best in my oppinion.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Not that I can remember.
Any additional comments?
A must-have for any history buffs like myself.

An insider’s view, far from objective, of himself, Hitler, WWII, and the failed art of propaganda
This is perhaps the most interesting chronicle of the “Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” since the outstanding work of the same name by William L. Shirer from 50 years ago. Not as comprehensive as Shirer’s classic, nor is it objective in any way, “Goebbels: A Biography” is more of an autobiography largely based on Hitler’s Propaganda Minister’s diaries which he safely stored away in a bank to survive the war, and to be used by future generations in praise of his genious and successes. Of course, this was all in his mind and he was not particularly intelligent, nor was he successful in just about anything but his suicide following the murder of his wife and children as the Russians closed in on Hitler’s bunker. Nevertheless, his daily narcissitic entries in his diary, coupled with detailed and well-researched context by the author, give the reader a new and unique view of Hitler, as if you were in the room when the two of them were planning their evil. Although Goebbels was never as close to Hitler as he would have you believe and acted more like Hitler’s puppy dog, he was equally as guilty in the commission of crimes against humanity and would have hung high at Nuremberg had he survived the Russian onslaught.

A Road Map For Radicals
A very personal look at Goebbels and a peek under the covers of Nazism, this biography, based on Goebbels’ diary, is chilling.
Not only do you get a good idea of the motivations of the man and his leader, you also get an uncomfortable feeling that certain factions in the US use this book as a how-to primer on riling the racist base of voters who like a strong leader.
A necessary, uncomfortable book.

Too Dependant on Diaries
Very static. No emotion. It's as if the author sat with the diaries in front of him and commented as he turned each page. Was a struggle to listen to and glad it ended. It's 28 hours I'll never get back!

A fascinating journey through Goebbles's Diar
My sole criticism is that the author besides using the adjective "narcissism" to describe Goebbels makes scant effort to understand this sick ,evil puppet of Hitler's. Otherwise, an honest chronological journey through this evil mind. He may have been effective at promoting the Cult of Hitler ,he seems to admire a true psychopath who needed Hitler's approval to live. He and his Wife's suicide at the end and that of their six children is clear evidence of the sick and I mean BTK mass killer sick.
Of all the clique around Hitler Goebbles to me is the most deranged. The offer offers no real insight into what made him so sick.
