About this listen

The climax and conclusion of one of the best-selling biographies of our time. The New Yorker declared the first volume of Ian Kershaw's two-volume masterpiece "as close to definitive as anything we are likely to see," and that promise is fulfilled in this stunning second volume.

As Nemesis opens, Adolf Hitler has achieved absolute power within Germany and triumphed in his first challenge to the European powers. Idolized by large segments of the population and firmly supported by the Nazi regime, Hitler is poised to subjugate Europe. Nine years later, his vaunted war machine destroyed, Allied forces sweeping across Germany, Hitler will end his life with a pistol shot to his head.

Critic reviews

"More probing, more judicious, more authoritative in its rich detail...more commanding in its mastery of the horrific narrative." (Milton J. Rosenberg, Chicago Tribune)

Fantastic, enthralling, may make you miserable.

Oh jesus christ humans. There's no excuse.
It's just people, just fear and pride and a thirst for honor. It's the cultural ulmination of the veneration of warfare and power.

Best Biography of Adolf Hitler

Ian Kershaw does and absolutely amazing job. He delves into the mind of Hitler and those around him. Explains in depth the nature of the Fuhrur cult, working towards the Fuhrur. Kershaw also examines the complexities of Nazi bureaucracy and the conflicting interests the dogged the Nazi system. A must read for any World War II historian.

Masterpiece

A very long book that worked well as audiobook due to superb narration. Such a complex book can be hard to follow, but the reader's phrasing helped me focus.

A must read for all Hitler scholars and WWII buffs.

Kershaw writing nearly two full generations from the Third Reich has the benefit of Goebles Diary and all the preceding scholars. His summation is interesting. Though not a bash on all German's his summation like most scholars is the seemingly unanswered question of how a modern, educated, highly advance Nation like the Germany of the 1930's fell into the spell of Hitler. But if yo look at the British Aristocracy that ruled Britain until Churchill was called in by the common people , I believe that most European countries were not anti Hitler just afraid of his military might.

A masterpiece of doom

The sense of foreboding one gets when listening to the final chapters is astonishing. Ian Kershaw does an excellent job trying to explain how such a cataclysmic damnation could've occurred. I still can't quite wrap my mind around it.

Hitler's hubris

Kershaw's identification of the Nazis hubris is absolutely spot on... after a lifetime of fascination with the subject of Nazism he could not have more precisely identified why we are still so haunted by the Third Reich. They literally scorned all morality with the belief that the "ends justify the means" even when those "means" are of millions of innocent lives snuffed out. How could arguably the most educated, literate, and economically developed country in the world fall under the hypnotic sway of Nazism.

Frightening this is so close

This is a must read for people to understand how we must remain on guard against evil. Kershaw's overriding message seems to be that the destruction brought about in the European theatre of World War II was not the work of one depraved psychopath, but the collaboration of many power-hungry, corrupt psychophants aided and abetted by an entire population willing to look away as they brought their own nation to destruction. The most frightening thing about this story is the fact that this evil was not rooted out, but was rather chased into hiding and we see signs that it is being emboldened today to rear once again in the West its grotesque, demoralizing head.
