About this listen

Robert E. Lee, a Christian and a gentleman, was the most remarkable man to emerge from the Civil War and is one of the greatest tragic figures of American history. Reserved and unflappable, savvy and fearless, shrewd and tenacious, fatherly and kind; these are but a few of the adjectives commonly used to describe this noble hero. By using a dramatic form of narrative and relying on numerous eyewitness accounts, Burke Davis brings Lee to life. Listening to this powerful work gives you the feeling you are there, with Lee, Jackson, and the rest. It is a rare blend of history and emotion, a book that speaks to both the mind and the heart.©1956 by Burke Davis (P)1990 by Blackstone Audiobooks Military War

This needs to be added to the cannon of US history books to be taught in schools across the country.

I have read literally hundreds of books spanning all of recorded history and have learned about countless military leaders. In light of that, this book blew my mind, and has unequivocally placed General Robert E. Lee on the very top of the list of military leaders who I most respect. When you read it, you will certainly see why.

There are a couple places where the sound goes a little wonky (like the narrator is walking through a tunnel), but it's not bad enough to keep me from rereading it in the future.

Low quality recording

What made the experience of listening to Gray Fox the most enjoyable?

Great story about Lee.

Any additional comments?

Low quality recording. Even in one place, it tells you that you are the end of a cassette - I was listening on an iPhone5. Also, there was a echo - usually a delay, but once it was ahead of the actual dictation. The latter was particularly noticeable with high quality earphones. Not up to Audible's usually high quality.

An interesting narrative

I knew almost nothing about Robert E Lee before I listened to this book. I found it quite interesting.

Two flaws in my mind:

As with any start to finish narrative, some of it is not as interesting as the rest.

The narrator was okay but not great.

As Great a General and Man as America has Made

Though written in the 1950s this book holds up well. It’s clear, concise and easy to listen to. The narrator is excellent. I was disappointed when it ended. Note that this book doesn’t cover Lee’s life after the end of the Civil War.

The war years.

This work describes the life of Robert E. Lee from the period just preceeding hostilities through Appomattox and the surrender of the Army of Virginia. Fairly good detail is delivered through first hand accounts and written documents of the time. I enjoyed the focus on Lee the man as much as Lee the general. A fast paced tell that is easy to listen to without effort as the story unfolds naturally and at a good pace.

A must for insight into one of America’s most extraordinary characters

This book is an exciting, chronological account of R.E. Lee’s Civil War years. Mr. Burke makes extensive use of original source material and created a lively and vivid portrait of General Lee. With a colorful cast of characters and geographical detail, I found this true story enlightening and surprising. This is not a comprehensive biography but is a very revealing portrayal of one of the most interesting characters in American history.

nothing you haven't heard about Lee before

this was written in 1955, so I suppose this is one of the original Lee books. it's fairly standard stuff regarding his prowess on the field in the face of superior forces.

the final few chapters had a bit more detail regarding the actual surrender and the moments and days after. Was it poetic license? maybe but it for well.

A number of people commented on the quality of the narrator. I want bothered by the narration as much as the poor recording quality from what sounds like over modulation.

Don't let that discourage you from giving this book a listen.
