About this listen

August 1, 1914, Berlin: Kaiser Wilhelm II cancels the German invasion of Belgium over the objections of his generals, sending his armies east against Russia instead of west to France, and sets off a chain of events that will radically change the course of modern history.

Gray Tide in the East is the best-selling counterfactual history of the First World War, if the Germans had not invaded Belgium in 1914 and thereby brought Great Britain and, eventually, the United States into the war. The carefully researched story is told by a host of real historical figures both famous (William Jennings Bryan, Winston Churchill) and obscure (Albert Dawson, Joost van Vollenhoven) and spans the globe from Washington, DC to Hanoi, from bloody battlefields to the secret chambers of diplomats.

Beautifully written, exquisite detail, impressive research, and one of the more thought-provoking books I have read in recent years.

SUPERB!

Would you listen to Gray Tide in the East again? Why?

I don't normally listen to audio books more than once, but if I did, I would consider listening to this one. It was a lot of fun.

What did you like best about this story?

I guess the juxtaposition of Germany not invading Belgium, thus keeping Britain out of the war, to be an amazing premise. I don't think that Britain would sit out of a massive war on their doorstep but it is plausible and would change the course of history.

What about Christopher M. Walsh’s performance did you like?

Mr. Walsh has a voice like velvet. His reading and tone bring these characters to life. I find his reading to be highly entertaining . I would like to hear more of his body of work!

Fun alternate history

Alternate history makes a great story line! And this book is first rate. The author created this believable "what if" and follows thru that changed decision and the results.
The narrator is good and very believable he conveys this alternate like it is how it happened.

The audiobook is an amazing listen - if you like historical fiction then this is a must.
And I will find more from this author to read.

The tenor and tone of this novel kept me intrigued through the entire book. The narrator did a fabulous job with numerous accents that did not distract from the content. In a word BRILLIANT!

Exceptional writing and brilliantly narrated

Please, please let me know if there are other alternate history, or historical fiction novels setbduring The Great War. I thought enjoy this title. Excellently done!

what if Germany had not invaded Belgium

This reads like a documentary. It covers facts, it gives military analysis- right down to the thickness of the armor on the hulls of different ships. It has battles but it has no action or drama. There aren’t any actual characters to cheer for or against.

If you’re into historical documentaries and have wondered what if... then this is your book. If you were expecting a fictional thriller with plot snd action and villains or a protagonist... you will be disappointed. As I was thinking it would be the latter...

The narrator is well suited to the documentary style, but that only compounded my disinterest.

I received this audiobook for free in exchange for a review.
