Everything in Emery Hazard’s life is finally going well: His boyfriend, Nico, is crazy about him; he has a loyal partner at work; and he has successfully closed a series of difficult murders. By all accounts, he should be happy. What he can’t figure out, then, is why he’s so damn miserable.
After a fight with Nico, Hazard needs work to take his mind off his relationship. And someone in town is happy to oblige by murdering the sheriff. The job won’t be easy; the sheriff had enemies, lots of them, and narrowing down the list of suspects will be difficult. Difficult, but routine.
The arrival of a special prosecutor, however, throws the case into turmoil, and Hazard and Somers find themselves sidelined. With an agenda of his own, the prosecutor forces the case toward his favorite suspect, while Hazard and Somers scramble to find the real killer. As the people they care about are drawn into the chaos, Hazard and Somers have to fight to keep what they love - and to keep each other. To find the killer, they will have to reveal what each has kept buried for years: their feelings for each other.
And for Hazard, that’s a hell of a lot scarier than murder.

The novel opens with a high-profile murder that shocks the community, leading Hazard and Somerset into a labyrinth of secrets and deception. As they investigate, they uncover connections to powerful individuals and long-hidden scandals. The narrative is expertly plotted, keeping readers engaged with its clever twists and unexpected developments. Hazard's life is further complicated with his personal relationships interfering with his professional life. And, the question: "do they or don't they" may finally get addressed. This is Ashe at his best!!
What sets this book apart is Ashe's deep dive into the deconstruction and evolving relationship between Hazard and Somerset. Their interactions are a compelling mix of professional camaraderie and personal tension, revealing their complexities and deep vulnerabilities. Hazard's uncompromising drive and Somerset's intuitive approach create a dynamic partnership that continues to propel the story arc forward.
"Guilt by Association" masterfully balances suspense with emotional depth, providing a satisfying and immersive listening experience. Gregory Ashe has crafted a compelling mystery that not only captivates with its plot elements but also resonates with the reader through its well-drawn characters.
This novel is another standout in this series and a must-listen for fans of thoughtful, character-focused crime fiction. Tristan James continues with his awesome narration skills.

Tristan James takes on another great cast of suspects, reminiscent of Transposition, with a dead sheriff and everyone who was present but didn't see a thing. And even more importantly, he finally delivers scenes of long-awaited romance! Tristan does a wonderful job with the vulnerability and intensity within those moments between Hazard and Somerset.
No one saw a thing!

I don't love this narrator. He has a way of speaking that occasionally veers over into Christopher Walken territory, only a little deeper. He has a limited range of female voices. However, here in book 4, something clicks into place. This story has something the others don't, which is more and longer stretches of witty banter between the two main characters. Hazard, whose angst is only exceeded by his rage, has settled into town, his job, and his partnership with Somerset enough to relax and let fly a dry, sharp humor. Paired with Somerset's teasing and sometimes juvenile humor, it brings light into their relationship that wasn't there before. And the narrator nails it.
I really like this series, and the reading of this one worked well.
Good match of narrator and story
