Publisher's summary

One morning in picture-perfect Bath, England, a teenage girl's body is found on the towpath of a canal: Lorne Woods - beautiful, popular, and apparently the victim of a disturbingly brutal murder. Zoe Benedict - Harley-riding police detective, independent to a fault - is convinced the department head needs to look beyond the usual domestic motives to solve the case. Meanwhile, Zoe's sister, Sally - recently divorced and in dire financial straits - has begun working as a housekeeper for a rich entrepreneur who quickly begins to seem possibly dangerous. When Zoe's investigation turns up evidence that Lorne's attempts to break into modeling had delivered her into the world of webcam girls and amateur porn, a crippling secret from Zoe's past seems determined to emerge.

A Little Disappointing, but Engaging

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The ending was a bit disappointing.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I liked the fact that Sally and Zoe were sisters.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

It was fine, nothing that really stood out, but fine.

Do you think Hanging Hill needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

It could, but it's not necessary, the story is essentially over.

My First MH, But Not Last

Good story, a little slow initially, but pace picked up and I found myself totally engaged. Like another reviewer, I too like happy endings, and this one was a bit of a cliff hanger, so I was a little disappointed with that.

Slow beginning, but worth the wait.

If you could sum up Hanging Hill in three words, what would they be?

Worth the wait. The first half hour or so frustrated me, but it all sorted itself out and it turned out to be a pretty good book. Well worth what I paid for it.

Any additional comments?

The ending was surprising and it left me wanting more.

Love Mo Hayder

She does it again, a little slow to start but love the twists and turns. Dark and twisty and I almost didn’t miss Jack Caffery

Twisting & Turning right up to the end!

So many twists and turns to the story, wasn't sure how this would end up - but yet, another twist... twisted it self right out of being a good read at the end of it.

Shocking Ending

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. The first three quarters of the book leads you to believe the ending will be predictable and that you understand what is happening. You don't. Also, so many books have a storyline that does not comport with the narrator's style. This one has the right narrator for the right story.

What did you like best about this story?

As I mentioned above, this book is all about the ending. I don't want to give it away so just read (listen) it. You will not be disappointed.

What does Rosalyn Landor bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narrator is superb. You fell as though you are in England; you are walking the streets; you are hearing the crowds and the traffic; and you are asking the questions.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not an emotional reaction but a psychological one. It was great!

Enjoyed, but gross and a little unbelievable

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I did think it was a little gross (I'll not give anything away) and the "grossness" could have been more believable if the male character with the mutilation plan would have been built up to be a very high profile agent instead of just a financial agent. I know that's a little convoluted, but I don't want to give too much away.

The ending really sets you up for the next book and continuation of these characters, which I liked.

Rosalyn Landor is one of my favorite narrators, but I typically listen to historical romance and I had a hard time envisioning the characters in this book with her "posh" (at least it's posh to me) British accent. Her accent is perfect for historical romance, but I didn't think it fit well in this murder mystery. BUT --- she delivers a very solid and enjoyable performance.

This was just okay

I was surprised that I did not enjoy this book more, I have been a big fan of Mo Hayder since reading the Devil of Nanking and Birdman. This book seemed a bit dry, a little hard to get through. While I'm not typically bothered by the graphic scenes in her books, this one had one that went a little longer than I was comfortable with. The sisters did not hold my interest, I could not invest myself in their lives. They seemed like very two dimensional characters from an author who has had such memorable ones. There are many more titles that I would recommend for Hayder fans before this one.

Good...But Felt A Bit Unfinished...

Would you consider the audio edition of Hanging Hill to be better than the print version?

I've only listened to the audio version and really enjoyed the narrator's performance.

Would you recommend Hanging Hill to your friends? Why or why not?

Overall, it was an intriguing story so I would recommend it, but I'd let my friends know how much the characters weighed on my nerves. I just couldn't seem to find anyone to root for.

Which character – as performed by Rosalyn Landor – was your favorite?

I enjoyed her performance of David Goldrab.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Suspense at every turn and all roads lead to Hanging Hill...

Any additional comments?

Hope the author's working on a sequel. So many questions left unanswered...
