About this listen

The steampunk adventure continues....

An ancient Egyptian artifact is driving Queen Victoria insane, and that's not top of Cara Devon's growing list of problems.

Viscount Nathaniel Lyons is a man of numerous secrets, but there is one in particular that threatens his fledgling relationship with Cara. Stunned by Nate's revelation, and before she can absorb the ramifications of his actions, he is arrested, charged with treason, and imprisoned in the grim Tower of London. He stole something the mad queen wants, and only has days to deliver, before his date with the executioner.

Although sorely tempted, Cara can't let him die on Tower Green, not when their connection means she would share his fate.

Only together can Cara and Nate figure out how to wrestle Hatshepsut's Collar from around the queen's neck, before she plunges Britain into a world war. The search for answers sends Cara to the opulent Winter Palace of St Petersburg and the frozen depths of Siberia, with every step shadowed by an enemy with his own dark plans.

Listen for the story

The story gets lost with the love scenes and sexual innuendo. Which is unfortunate since the plot is interesting. Probably won’t listen to the other books in this series.

Sizzling Adventure!

A fantastic book! A. W. Exley has given us a story of lavish adventure, exotic locations, harrowing escapes and sensual passionate love. Narrator Gemma Dawson has taken the story to a higher level of enjoyment by giving life to each character with their own individual voice and personality. I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it.

it was a good listen

not as good as the first but definitely worth the price. I'll follow the story in the next one of the series.

Loved this story…good performance too!

The two stories I’ve read so far in this book series are very good, very creative and innovative, however, they’re very sexually explicit. Is the sexuality necessary—not really, and this somewhat distracts from the storyline at times. But it’s still nice and enjoyable all the same! Highly recommend.

Sorting (or swording) out their relationship

“Your idea of fun sounds suspiciously like suicide to me.”
This installment takes to the skies in airships, as befits any series calling itself steampunk. There’s more action and time with the supporting cast. It was great fun to see Cara find her place within Nathaniel’s gallery of rogues.

“Even diamonds break under too much pressure.”
While I enjoyed the adventure side of the story, the romance was uneven. Picking up a few months after the first book, it made no sense why Nathaniel would hide a certain secret. Once the secret was out and Cara was pissed, it made even less sense why he meekly argued his side. Likewise, you’d think a pistol wearing, er, pistol like Cara would blow up and then quickly realize his motivations. Instead, she spends the entire book fretting about whether she can forgive the man she loves for keeping the secret.

“Call me Icarus, for it’s time to embrace the flame!”
I guess love makes fools of us all. And, acting against their normal character did extend their hate-flirting. There’s a lot more innuendo and sexual banter, both with the MCs and people like Loki.
If you can’t handle kink fixations, occasional F bombs, and raunchy bits, then skip this book.
The next two books provide only fade to black sex.
Personally, I liked the combo of steampunk and just plain steam.

If it wasn’t free...

Really I’d give it a 3.5 but I rounded up. It’s not till the last quarter that it’s actually captivating. Somehow even though there’s little build up and tons of action, this isn’t that interesting of a story. But it is free so I’ll probably finish the series. With how it ended I’m hopeful the next book will be cooler.

Better than Book One

In this one, the second in the series, the sexual dialogue is much less, and the mystery of Hatshepsut's Collar is top on the agenda. I still see people complaining, but to my ears, this one has it right. Cara is still as sassy as ever. Lord Lyon's is still searching for artifacts, and has actually been in the Queen's employ . . . that is until she got mesmerized by the dreaded collar. There's a lot of weird and mechanical antics, which would never have actually happened in the 1860s, but I find them interesting. I particularly love Cara's grandmother. Hatshepsut's Collar makes me glad I didn't quit listening to the first book in the series, which I nearly did. Stick it out, these are different and fun.
