Born in Trinidad, Hazel and her family moved to New York City during the Roaring Twenties. Hazel displayed a startling musical talent, and the remarkable wonder child received an audition at Juilliard at the tender age of eight years. In her teens, she became a fixture at the celebrated Café Society, the Big Apple's first fully integrated nightclub.
Embarking on a career in Hollywood in the 1940s and '50s, Hazel continued a staunch advocacy of civil rights even as she reached ever-greater heights of stardom.

The Pioneering Journey of a Jazz Pianist
By Karen Chilton
I knew very little of this woman, who was such a star and tour de force in her own right.
What a life! What a story!
To have lived such a blazingly full life with such highs and saddened lows, it's baffling to understand why much brighter light hasn't been shown on her legacy.🌟💖💫💔
The end of it all, my spirit was left quite a bit sad, even mournful😥. Although she mapped oug a lane of her own, and can't nobody steal her shine, I really do wish history would remember her more affirmly.
