About this listen

A powerful healer. A treacherous enemy. A deadly conflict.

Tatya's world slides into chaos when a demon consumed with the desire to control her power attacks those she loves. She refuses the local master vampire’s offer of aid, as he's just turned her best friend into one of the undead. She needs allies, but who can she trust in the battle to destroy this dangerous enemy?

If you like urban fantasy laced with mysticism, fast-paced action, and stubborn independent heroines, you'll love this fresh innovative take on the vampire/demon myth.

Healer’s Magic is book one in the Kala Trilogy.

I tried...

From the description, I thought I’d love this book. As it turns out, I gave up after 4 hrs. It started out good but after a few chapters I lost interest. The narration does not do the story any favors. The narrator sounded like she was trying to speed read. I thought maybe I had accidentally set the speed higher than 1x but that was not the case. The character voices, especially the aunt and the best friend, were not good. The only character voice that didn’t sound forced was the MC.

Unique take on vampires, demons, shamans, and magical healers

This is an interesting story with flash backs from previous lives where the heroine went through so much turmoil and anguish. She does give the word stubborn a whole new meaning. It doesn’t matter how much help the master vampire offers her she declines and always seems annoyed with him. Yet, he helps her over, and over again.

Narration was excellent and brought the story to life.

The world building was well done and the characters well developed. Although, I felt like smacking the main character a few times for her dumb stubbornness.

The story wrapped up well with some unsolved issues that will be addressed in the next couple of books. I’m looking forward to finding out what happens next.

Great story!

The story is well written, creative, and intriguing. The narrator has a pleasant voice however I think she needs to slow down just a little because it sounds like someone speed reading.

OK

From the book cover I thought this was a YA and it isn't even though it has a YA feel to it.
I was hooked from the beginning, I loved the little history we got to start of with and I thought this was going to be a great listen. As the book progressed I found that the main character really annoying and I have to admit that I did not like her at all. I could not understand why people wanted her (as a friend). She came across as a horrible person.
It didn't help that the book was slow paced, I didn't feel the urgency at all. There were flash backs which I don't usually like in a book, however, I found them more interesting then what happened in the future.
There are some aspect of the book that are really good and if the author got the suspense right it would have been better even with an annoying main character.

I’m trying

I have been trying to finish this book for weeks now. The narrator is not one I’ve heard before and honestly just not for me. I don’t like leaving bad reviews as everyone is different and enjoys different things.

Narrator on fast forward?

I picked up this audiobook because I love the Adept Solutions series by this same author. Although I enjoyed this audiobook, there were a few things that disappointed. First, the narrator seemed like she was on fast forward for the first part of the book. Eventually, either she slowed a little or I got used to it. Other than that, I guess I didn't understand why Tatya was so mean to her former friend, Sean. She thought he had no say in his turning, so why did she punish him? I also didn't fully understand why she remained so vicious toward Vance, even after he helped her and she learned of their history and connection. Finally, I thought the battle with Angelus was a bit anticlimactic after all the build-up. I don't want to leave any spoilers, but the conclusion seemed pretty swift. Still, it was an enjoyable listen overall, and I will likely pick up the next book in eBook or audio.

No HEA or HFN

This review contains spoilers. The FMC has a hatred for vampires. But as the story unfolds, she realizes that the master vampire she hates most has a love for her so deep that he has been protecting her from a demon over several lifetimes and waits for her and finds her again in her next reincarnation to keep protecting her. Despite this, she just can't overcome her experiences from this lifetime. I felt like I was thrown into the story in the middle and missed a book with some of the backstory. The narrator was mediocre.

Healer’s Magic

An interesting story. Tatya’s powers are awakening, and through a series of flashbacks/dreams, she’s learning more about herself and her history.

Teagan Kearney has done a great job of building the background for this new series and I look forward to seeing where she takes it.

Rachel Leblang’s narration was well done. She brought the story to life.
