Publisher's summary

The Scourwind family legacy brought the empire to the height of its power and prosperity and defended it against all enemies. Now one man's machinations aim to shift the balance of power - with violent and devastating consequences.

When the trusted General Corian launches a coup against Emperor Scourwind, he hurls the planetary kingdom into chaos. To secure his claim as ruler, Corian will need the strength of the Scourwind name behind him, and he will stop at nothing to bring under his grasp the young Scourwind heirs, twins Lydia and Brennan. Barely into adulthood, the two are thrust into the crossfire. Battling new obstacles at every turn, they eventually find refuge with Mira Delsol, pirate and former member of the elite empire forces.

As the stakes rise, loyalists, mercenaries, and political opportunists rally around the heirs in a desperate bid to unseat the usurper. But if their risky gambit fails, will the empire crumble into oblivion?

Ok story, mediocre overall.

A bit too YA for my taste. All fantasy action but no character depth. Narators inflections simplistic as were many of the dialogues.

So much great content and mystery!

I'm really enjoyed this story line and the fantasy world you've envisioned. Hope many more to come in this series.

Uninspired story, lacklustre performance.

The story seemed flat, no real tension or drama, except a few small points. The world the book is set in, and it's technology, have some interesting facets, but the story rarely leveraged it. Most of the characters are shallow, two dimensional, and seemed quite generic. The narrator is a bit halting, and the conversation passages never felt natural. This story may work as a foundation for future books in a series, and with a better narrator, they may be better, as I believe this author has more to offer, based on other books he has written.

pretty good

The poor performance really detracted from the story. The story move at a good pace. I'll try the next in the series.

Decent Story, Terrible Narrator

I struggled to finish because the narrator is just not good. the story kept me hooked enough to finish despite that. I doubt I'll pick up book 2 because I'm not sure if I can stomach the narrator again.

I loved the world building

This is world building on Sanderson's level.
You connect to the main characters in the book and cheers them on. The title of the book is misguiding I think as the strong female main character only has a bi-role. There is things that is mysterious and ready for reviling in the sequels. I hope for that at least.

Great narrative

Great story, easy to follow, but still entertaining. Perfect for the daily commute. I've already bought the sequel.

Good plot - a little rough listen at times

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The book itself is OK, but some of the character interactions and development left me disappointed. There are also some assumptions made that the reader simply knows the political landscape and the various characters back history without explanation.

Would you be willing to try another book from Evan Currie? Why or why not?

I've read of Currie's other books, so there is a possibility...

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

As previously mentioned - the character development was just not there. So I don't necessary blame the narrator.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Not unless something changed..

Any additional comments?

This book had more potential - it seemed like it was rushed and therefore only gets a 3 out of 5.

An entertaining YA book.

Some criticized the reader on this book, but I thought he was fine. I’ve read most of Currie’s series and found this a bit tame and uncomplicated until I realized that this must be a YA novel. That certainly explains the lack of salty language and any element of male-female attraction. If this is the case, I think it should be presented as such so the readers of his more complex and grown up novels don’t buy it with the wrong anticipation that it will be like his other series. If taken as YA, it is an excellent book for that age group. I do enjoy some YA novels, so I can say that this book was entertaining to me and I will read the sequel to see how he ties this up. For a parent seeking an imaginative sci-fi book for their YA reader, with no profanity, goriness, or sexual content this book is a perfect selection!

Potential

Story does not get going until chapter 8 or 9. Voice performance is lacking and is the drag on this new series. Very interesting world building and mythology being set up. I will purchase the next book in the series.
