Publisher's summary

Three stories in one collection

Are you ready to be engulfed in a world in which man battles with deep emotions of vengeance, the pressures of society, and passive resistance? Herman Melville’s descriptive style of storytelling captivates and thrills listeners as he deftly reveals the undertones and themes of racial conflict, truth, and social injustice.

Story 1: Moby Dick

Revenge turns into an obsessive quest when a seafaring captain, Ahab, seeks out the elusive giant white sperm whale known to sailors on the high seas as Moby Dick. Sometimes referred to as the "greatest book of the sea ever written", this classic of the American Renaissance era is among the world’s most endeared stories. Ishmael, a bold, adventurous sailor tells this prophetic tale of vengeance, warring perceptions of the world, and the search for truth amid racial conflict.

Story 2: "Bartleby the Scrivener"

As a short story, the narrator, a lawyer in a Wall Street firm, is intrigued and enthralled by Bartleby’s strange character and refusal to perform his assigned tasks. Through his passive resistance, the scrivener enlightens the listener by seemingly poking fun at the rising importance of money and economic control of the time. As the story thoughtfully unfolds, the listener is drawn in by the great detail by which each character and scene are described.

Story 3: Sailor Billy Budd

Named as the ring leader of a rumored mutiny, Billy Budd, a handsome, young, naïve sailor, has peacefully resigned himself to his fate. Yet before his fate is sealed, Billy earns the status as a legend among sailors for his selfless compliance to authority. Described as intellectually and emotionally limited, his character will capture the listener's heart with his good-natured attitude.

Timeless Relevance!!

I never realized how much these stories, written so long ago and thought to be just classical books, have such relevance for society today. Herman Melville was ahead of his time. I laughed, I cried. Although I had read Moby Dick when I was young, I did not fully understand its meaning. I will be sure to include this and all Melville books as a timeless classic on my bookshelf to be read again and again. Every generation should be encouraged to read Melville for his wisdom and humor.

wonderful

I love these package deals. Three stories in one. I was searching for Moby Dick and came across this Herman Melville collection. I admit I was equally impressed with Bartleby the Scrivener and Sailor Billy Budd. I read Moby Dick years ago when I was in high school and wanted to share the story with my wife who had never read it/listened to it. She absolutely loved all three stories. The production quality was excellent on this. 10/10 would recommend.

What a treasure.

Moby Dick is my all-time favorite. Herman Melville’s ability to portray racial conflict, truth, and the societies’ on-going struggles in words is breathtaking. This Great American novel, which details the adventures of sailor Ishmael, was way ahead of its time.

Overall, this collection offers the best classics of Herman Melville all in one. The performance of these classics is suburb and well worth listening to the audio sample. Highly recommend 10/10!
