About this listen

Fifty years after its original publication, Catch-22 remains a cornerstone of American literature and one of the funniest - and most celebrated - novels of all time. In recent years, it has been named to "best novels" lists by Time, Newsweek, the Modern Library, and the London Observer. Set in Italy during World War II, this is the story of the incomparable, malingering bombardier Yossarian, a hero who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him. But his real problem is not the enemy - it is his own army, which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service. Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to excuse himself from the perilous missions he's assigned, he'll be in violation of Catch-22, a hilariously sinister bureaucratic rule: A man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions, but if he makes a formal request to be removed from duty, he is proven sane and therefore ineligible to be relieved.

Since its publication in 1961, no novel has matched Catch-22's intensity and brilliance in depicting the brutal insanity of war. This 50th-anniversary edition commemorates Joseph Heller's masterpiece with a new introduction by Christopher Buckley; personal essays on the genesis of the novel by the author; a wealth of critical responses and reviews by Norman Mailer, Alfred Kazin, Anthony Burgess, and others; rare papers from Joseph Heller's personal archive; and a selection of advertisements from the original publishing campaign that helped turn Catch-22 into a cultural phenomenon. Here, at last, is the definitive edition of a classic of world literature.

Very strange

I’m not going to lie, I didn’t think I was going to enjoy this book. Based off of the first half of it. Luckily I can’t start a book without finishing it and it turned out that the book has a interesting and very unique story. The narration was above par. I’m glad I listened to catch 22

Repetitive

I loved this book for about 1/3. By the half way point I couldn't do it anymore. Everyone has the same circular talking style (think: Who's on first), loves the thing they hate, and hates the thing they love. There are genuinely funny parts, and I really did love that first 1/3. Top notch performance by the guy reading it.

Soo Funny, Even If It Does Get A Tad Old

Catch-22 has aged well with time, but starts getting old after awhile. It has everything you remember: the goofy characters, the convoluted reasoning that really sticks it to ya, the slapstick situations.
But after some time, you start getting a little used to the buffoons, the buffoonery. After all, it clocks in at almost 20 hours. You get used to people spazzing out and doing the unutterably stupid.
But that's its only flaw.
What particularly struck me, what I didn't remember, was how touching it actually is: the friendships, the fear, the overwhelming desire to just live another day. This is a book that can be quite moving.
And Jay O. Sanders turns in a truly remarkable performance. Each character is delivered in fine form, and you can tell that, stupid as they come off as, they each feel themselves to be the hero of their own story.
And then there's the end. It's one of touching high hopes, no matter how odd it may seem to the reader. Yossarian is willing to do anything, absolutely anything, to save his crumbling sanity, his very precarious existence.
Written with humor and desperate pathos, Catch-22 is a wriggly romp into a nightmare of a time. Even if it starts getting a bit old at times, it's always worth the chuckles.

The Plot Had Everything

The plot in the book had everything: business, deceit, insubordination, politics, honour, injustice, love, to name a few.

Super depressing

It's a super depressing but most likely accurate view of the world in many areas not exclusively held by the military.

Dancing on the fine line between genius and madness

I have never heard a book like this.

This book is like that sage who everyone thinks is mad but he/she has understood the mystery of life and thus laughs at inappropriate times. Or perhaps the sage is really mad and everyone just thinks that he/she is an enlightened being. Who knows?

So many times I felt that this book would be better off being read than listened too but you haven’t heard a book till you heard this one. What an amazing job by the narrator! Fantastic!

At times the madness in this book became so frustrating that I felt like tearing my hairs off but then it comes and hits you in the gut with such sentiment that I was teary eyed.

Really, this is that side of the war that we rarely think about or get to know about.

Anyone can relate to this story. Please listen to this book.

Just as Spectacular as Ever

This review is immediately biased, as this book has been my favorite since I was a young man. I never laughed so hard while reading a book in my life.
Jay O. Sanders does a stupendous job voicing all the different characters, even if it's a bit awkward to hear when he voices Nately's cooing Italian who're.
That having been said, this is excellent. This book is better every time I read it.

Not My Favorite, But Still Enjoyable

Where does Catch-22 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I started this book once, returned it, and then decided to buy it again because I had gotten so far my first try and just wanted to finish it. Honestly, I enjoyed it more upon finishing it than I did while I was in the actual process of reading it. At 2 minutes shy of 20 hours, this is a pretty hefty audiobook. While I don't mind books being that long, this book was incredibly repetitive to the point of being predictable. Catch-22 was funny to me at first, but the jokes ended up becoming a tad redundant and eye-roll inducing. That being said, I am glad that I got through it. The plot is quite chaotic and the pieces start fitting together toward the end of the novel. What made this read worthwhile to me was the wide range of realistic characters that Heller created. It was a bit hard to keep track of all of them, but each character was truly unique, distinctive, and interesting. The narration was also fantastic and helped me from losing interest in the book. Jay O. Sanders gives the main characters different and convincing voices which allows you to become immersed in the story.

tl;dr: While chaotic and long, Catch-22 is full of captivating characters and is narrated spectacularly.
