About this listen

In the newest installment of the best-selling series Mythos, legendary author and actor Stephen Fry moves from the exploits of the Olympian gods to the deeds of mortal heroes.

Perseus. Jason. Atalanta. Theseus. Heracles. Rediscover the thrills, grandeur, and unabashed fun of the Greek myths. Whether recounting a tender love affair or a heroic triumph, Fry deftly finds resonance with our own modern minds and hearts.

  • Each adventure is infused with Fry's distinctive voice and writing style.
  • Connoisseurs of the Greek myths will appreciate this fresh-yet-reverential interpretation, while newcomers will feel welcome.
  • Retellings brim with humor and emotion.

"Mostly Chiron saw in the child, and the young man he became, boundless courage, athleticism, intelligence, and ambition. He saw too lots of words beginning with 'self', which gave him pause. Self-belief, self-possession, self-righteousness, self-confidence, self-love. Perhaps these characteristics are as necessary to a hero as courage."

In Heroes, Fry draws out the humor and pathos in both tender love affairs and heroic battles, and reveals each myth's relevance for our own time.

makes old stories new again

I'm not a big fan of old stories that attempt a direct translation, but this book tells those tales reliably, but in a tone and style that is pleasing to modern ears. Telling the grand myth in a friendly conversation.

Not as good as Mythos but still great

I loved Mythos and subsequently bought the authors other two books. This is a great listen with some stretches where the mix of humor and story don’t quite land as well. That being said, i I’ll still recommend it to friends, family and even strangers such as yourself. Enjoy!

So lush and engrossing

The characterizations and manner of storytelling are so overwhelmingly charming. Mr. Fry leads you perfectly into traps of hope, comfort and despair which are always enjoyable and heartfelt. Loved this book so much. He is such a wonderful storyteller and performer.

Fry is Sublime

This is even better than Mythos. He’s really hit his stride here. What I love about his retelling is how straightforward yet compelling it is. I ask myself, why am I reading yet another recounting of Western myths, but in his hands (and his wonderful, effortless seeming performance), they become relevant as foundations for all story telling.

Who can beat the stories?

Well performed. Enchanting stories that have lasted and been retold through countless millennia. Stephen Fry’s retelling is right up there with Edith Hamilton’s and Mary Renault’s. I hope will be more from this author. Mythos was equally enjoyable. What next?

Loved it!!

Loved the stories, loved the narration. Stephen Fry is hilarious and has such an easy voice to listen to. I jumped right into Heroes without first reading 'Mythos' and it wasn't an issue, but I do plan on buying 'Mythos' now that I enjoyed 'Heroes' so much!

A Splendid Retelling

What a listen! Fry’s retelling of the Greek myths is not simply a recapitulation of old material, but his own personal synthesis of the stories from multiple sources. His voice is sometimes pompous and grandiose, while at other times impudent and facetious, mirroring both the epic grandeur and almost comedic absurdity of the Heroes’ stories. The passion here is obvious, as well as the personal significance of the entire mythos to the author. “Heroes” is an exceptional listen for enthusiasts of classic history, patrons of theater, and anyone looking to hear compelling stories delivered in a charismatic and caring voice.
