Love the stories

Love the stories and the story teller! Derek Perkins is one of my favorite narrators. The author does a great job of explaining the tale and the variations. Great listen.

Old Tales, New Eyes

This is a new look at many old myths in an easy to understand conversational approach.

Derek Perkins' narration is unhurried and solid.

Adults only

I want aware that this book contains sexually explicit content/erotica. There is also sexually violent content. I was listening to it first with earbuds thank God because I usually listen to audio books in my car when my kid is with me.

there needs to be a warning for this sort of content.

Some myths I’d never heard of.

Good retelling. I’d like more analysis. Explore Artemis and Apollo. Lamia. Confused me. Some more current feminist analysis.

A solid bit of information

First, I love the narration. Derek Perkins sounds awesome every time I hear him. Between him and Tim Gerard Reynolds, they are my favorite consistently heard narrators.

As for the stories…

I was surprised that they would be written in a story form at all. I got wind of this by the YouTube channel Mythology Explained and didn’t think it would be this well written set of derivative stories.

I was pleasantly surprised by them. I enjoyed my time with this audiobook a great deal, and hope that another set of story will come.

Time, well, spent.

It seemed to me that the authors used the legends as a bare framework for their own stories, keeping out the true drama and excitement. While the writing was simple enough that children could easily follow the storylines, the needless inclusion of fairly graphic sex scenes made the book more like a cheap, yet puerile porn magazine. Some of the dialog reminded me of the cheese-laden pulp magazines of decades past.

Several times, I stopped to wonder if I should continue, but I spent the credit, so I thought I might as well trudge through.

The reader was clear and professional, but lacked conviction and passion. This made me think he wasn’t at all interested in the work, just a paycheck.

Simple, and brilliant idea

I have read, and listened to numerous tellings of Greek myths, and after listening to Greek Myths Exaplained the only thing I cannot explain is why someone didn't think of it before.

The authors' technique of combining sources, filling in the gaps and injecting some recognizable modernity into characters made this like listening to these stories for the first time.

Hearing the inner voice of Medusa while the tale unfolds more slowly than the traditional version reinforces the tragedy and depth of her character and leads to a greater appreciation of the original stories.

The best I've ever heard.

This book is well written and well performed. Over the years I have come across hundreds of versions of these stories, and these stories agree with the best of them, and add suitable details to fill in some of the major gaps in the traditional stories (personalities, conversation details, etc.). I am a bit of an Ancient Greek enthusiast, and so I tend toward the purist mindset. As such, it's rare that I find anything written about their mythology within the last millennium that that I think is worthwhile. This book is so impressive that my only regret is that this isn't Book 1 of 30 in a series.
