About this listen

Published for the first time in the US, Hidden Depths is an early audiobook in Diamond Dagger award-winning crime author Ann Cleeves's Vera Stanhope series, brought to life in the hit TV series Vera.

On a hot summer on the Northumberland coast, Julie Armstrong arrives home from a night out to find her son murdered. Luke has been strangled, laid out in a bath of water and covered with wild flowers. This stylized murder scene has Inspector Vera Stanhope and her team intrigued. But now, Vera must work quickly to find this killer who is making art out of death.

As local residents are forced to share their private lives, sinister secrets are slowly unearthed. And all the while the killer remains in their midst, waiting for an opportunity to prepare another beautiful, watery grave....

Another great Vera story

Fantastic stories, characters, and a perfect reader. A real pleasure. I love the TV show as well, and picture the wonderful Brenda Blethyn as I listen to the books.

One of the best

I love all the Ann Cleeves books, but this was one of the best. Marvelous characters are always a wonderful part of her stories, and this one has a very interesting group to be sorted by the inimitable Vera Stanhope.

Just another great old Vera story

I love Vera Stanhope tales and this is a good one. Vera is her same old overweight, drinks too much self. She attacks the mystery of the deaths with all her life skills and away we go. Loved it!

Vera at her best!

Since everyone was a possible suspect, I couldn’t figure out the killer actually until it was revealed. I think this is Ann Cleeves’ best book yet. Ann Dover IS Vera. ‘Can’t wait for the next book in this series.

Vera and her flaws succeeds

Good mystery story and character development going in reverse. Since I’m listening to it, not visually reading it, at random times I lose track of who’s who especially when the first and last names are interchanged. So I was grateful for the nice wrap up at the conclusion. Loved the narrators talent w sublet accents and our main character and her flaws but persistence.

Vera is the most compelling detective

Because she’s real. So real. Not secretly brilliant behind a brooding veneer. Not secretly desirable behind her distant broken demeanor. She’s a pissy, overweight, fallible, older woman. I just love this series.

Good book

I like hearing off the stories of Beers that I first watched on television.

The action is well paced and the characters developed nicely.

Well done.

A multi-layered mystery

A complex, and very well written story. The narration is excellent. Ann Sleeves is as psychological as any therapist.
