About this listen

He was a legend on the battlefield, but Aric Neville, known throughout England as the White Lion, had had his fill of intrigue and bloodshed. So he threw down his sword and walked away, to live a solitary life, cultivating a reputation as a sorcerer. But his prized tranquility was shattered when the villagers brought him a bride. Gwenyth de Auburd was a raven-haired beauty too impudent to ignore and too tempting to resist. When the war raging around them sucked Aric into his past again, he also fought a losing battle against his undeniable desire for the luscious, willful maiden...only to learn that he had come to cherish her as his wife.

The story and writing were pretty good. I was actually surprised because this is a new author for me. However, Tim Campbell can make a calculus textbook sound amazing and sexy. 😊

A good story

I enjoyed how the author intertwined history into her novel. Her writing and the characters are so relatable and unique. The story flows well and is descriptive as if you are watching a movie play out in your mind.

I have to say the performance by the voice actor made the story even more enjoyable. When I search out the narrator, to see what other stories he has done.

Narrator and story was amazing and fun!

Started out pretty good, but the leading lady who was supposed to be strong and spunky, became irritating enough, I wanted to slap her. Her name calling was forced and no longer cute by the end. And every action up to the last 10 minutes showed her to be a unrepentant gold digger. Then at the last second she is suddenly so in love she would give it all up for him.

Irritating Lady

I wouldn’t advise to read this book. The only reason I read it is because the narrator is Team Campbell. The story is so dull and it’s drones on and on with their bickering. I did not like it at all.

Unacceptable read but I could not even complete it till the end. The only reason I took it up was for Team

I had no idea that Shayla Black wrote historical romance until I stumbled across this audiobook - I loved it! My only regret is that the rest of this series is not yet on Audible so I am (im)patiently waiting for the continuation :)

This book is set near the end of the War of the Roses and Aric Neville, famed Yorkist warrior and cousin to Queen Anne, has become disillusioned with the constant fighting, politics and bloodshed. Gwenyth is a saucy, beautiful, spoiled and stubborn yet hilarious character who is both irritating and loveable. As I came to understand her character (and her lamentable circumstances brought on by her cruel family) I was charmed by her creative insults, her refusal to be silenced, and her compassionate nature.

Shelley Bradley (a.k.a. Shayla Black) weaves a Phillipa-Gregory-meets-Sylvia-Day tale with skill, humor and sensuality. Tim Campbell is talented as ever in his narration of His Lady Bride. There is some explicit sex in the book but by no means does it take over the story-line. A well-written, sexy, medieval tale of love, politics, war, family, and duty. Keep them coming!!

Not sure I like the female lead. Her thought process was rather simple and her character flat while the rest was well rounded

Female is a bit trite

The leading lady made me mad over and over. Too selfish. The story overall was ok. Wish the heroine wasn’t so selfish and idiotic. Felt sorry for the leading man more often than not.

Meh

Pretty predictable story, the main female character is annoying and fairly unbelievable for that time period. The way her character is written seems historically inaccurate in terms of language & bearing. She's supposed to be well bread, yet she constantly insults by name calling and acts out every single one of her emotions at all times. These are highly unlikely traits for a well bread woman of that time period.
Also she can't cook at all even though her unkindly uncle relegated her to the kitchens and pantry for years and she's a hard worker..? Sure, whatever.
They say the devil is in the details and well, I guess this is a book where the details are not that important as long as the sex keeps going.

Tim Campbell's performance is excellent. He's great with the accents.

predictable story, pretty good performance

I liked how all three of the male main characters are included from the beginning rather than squirrelling them away until its their turn to tell their story. It makes me want to learn what happens to the other two men even more!

It was ok to pass the time doing dishes but this book was nothing special.
