About this listen

Berebury golf course in the county of Calleshire is an unlikely place for a murder. Set in pleasant landscape and boasting a splendid view of the town of Berebury, the golf course is more situated to fun and games than murder and mayhem. So when flirtatious golfing beginner Helen Ewell goes in search of a wayward golf ball in the dreaded "Hell's Bells" bunker she is not prepared for the horrible surprise that lies buried beneath the soft sand.

Love this mystery as much as I've enjoyed all the previous in this series!

Enjoyed another good mystery

Really good mystery. Fabulous for golfers who will get all of the subtle golf terms.
Really good narration.

Golfers mystery

This is not my favorite Detective Sloan mystery. The characters were hard to keep straight and the narration was dreadful. The narrator used peculiar voices for some of the characters and Dr. Dabb was almost impossible to understand. Where is Derek Perkins???
I see the next audible book in this series has a different narrator so I will continue. I have enjoyed this series too much to abandon it now. Here’s hoping for a better listen next time!

Poor narrator and too many characters.

This is a good British mystery by Catherine Aird, I would think this would appeal to golfers. The characters are believable and the story flows very nicely. The narrating and voices by Bruce Montague are top shape.

I’m very much enjoying listening the Catherine Aird’s Callehire Chronicles. I like a good mystery and I don’t like crime novels turned into a romance instead. That makes this series right up my alley. 😊 it’s all about the case

I have really enjoyed Catherine Aird’s books after discovering them on Audible, but had a hard time getting into this one. The narrator made her sound stuffy and boring when her writing is anything but. The narrator of most of the Audible Catherine Aird books, Derek Perkins is much, much better. I would recommend trying one of those if you are unfamiliar with her work.

Good book, poor narration

A short, well written mystery. It’s not graphic or gritty, but the characters have some depth.

Just right!

I particularly liked the tie-in of this mystery with the Biblical story of Gehazi trying to cash in on the desire of Naaman to reward Elisha for curing him of leprosy, which reward Elisha had refused. It helped me to understand the exposition of the plot. I did not, however, like this new narrator. While I have some reservations about Derek Perkins, he had done so many of Catherine Aird’s books that he set the voices of the main repeating characters. This new narrator exaggerated the accents so much that it was difficult to distinguish who was whom.

A modern-day Gehazi

I enjoy Catherine Aird's mysteries -- they are complex and interesting, and the personalities of the crime investigators are delightful. This narrator, however, is absolutely glorious. The voices he manifests, and the drawling, interesting, brogues and accents are spot on and add so much to the story. I'm going to track down some more of his book narrations.

The narrator is marvelous

The characters are fully realized, both due to the author's talent and contributions by the narrator. The mystery keeps your interest and is grounded in a realistic setting - altogether a very enjoyable experience.

Wonderful characterization s
