About this listen

Nothing good ever happens after dark.

Those were the words country singer Daleigh McDermott's father always repeated. Now her father is dead, and Daleigh fears she has returned home too late to make things right. As she's about to flee back to Nashville, she finds a hidden journal belonging to her father. His words hint that his death was no accident.

Small town mechanic Ryan Shields is the only one who seems to believe that Daleigh may be on to something. Her father trusted the man, but Daleigh's instant attraction to Ryan scares her. She knows her life and career, however dwindling it might be, are back in Nashville and that her time in the sleepy North Carolina town is only temporary.

As Daleigh and Ryan work to unravel the mystery, it becomes obvious that someone wants them dead. They must rely on each other - and on God - if they hope to make it home before the darkness swallows them whole.

Small Town Secrets, Country Music and Faith

A surprisingly GREAT listen! Daleigh McDermott returns to her small hometown in North Carolina for her father’s funeral, thinking she would soon return to Nashville and continue making records, but she finds some of her dad’s journals, leading her to believe his death was no accident. Her strained relationship with her older sister, Hannah, was a point of tension in the story. Overly demanding and hard on Daleigh, Hannah never seemed satisfied with Daleigh’s choices. Both girls were raised by their dad after their mother died of cancer when the girls were young, putting Hannah, at age nine in the maternal role. With Daleigh and her dad’s personalities more alike, creative and sensitive, their closeness caused jealousy with Hannah. The family had strong Christian values, which endured throughout their younger and adult lives. When Daleigh began to investigate their father’s death, Hannah objected, causing even more friction. I loved the chance meeting between Ryan, the young auto mechanic and Daleigh, and how the two became friends, amateur sleuths and eventually became attracted to one another. Clean romance, well told. The story of Ryan’s nephew, the benefit concert and the ending of the story were SUPERB.
