Birdy thought she would have to wait until she was free again to see Rose, but now Rose has been convicted of a shocking crime and she and Birdy will be together. Birdy has been saving all her anger for Rose. It is Rose who should have protected her and kept her safe.
Birdy was little but Rose was big and she knows Rose could have saved her. This is a story about monsters who hide in plain sight and about the secrets we keep from ourselves. It is about children who are betrayed and adults who fail them. This is the story of Birdy who was hurt and Rose who must be made to pay.
A provocative and compassionate listen from the queen of white-knuckle suspense and searing family drama.

Let me start by saying that this was my first book by this author. I think I will probably read another by her now that I’ve finished this one.
Initially, I thought this was rather a strange story, and I didn’t much care for the character Felicity/Birdy; but as the story continued and as I began to put pieces together, my opinion of her began to change and I grew to like her more. I liked the other main character Rose as an adult, but found the young, teenage Rose to be too naive for me (and for her own good).
As I got more into the book I found myself becoming more and more curious. I couldn’t imagine waking up and finding myself in Rose’s position — waiting to find out if she would be convicted of a crime and worrying about what it would be like to go from the life she had to a life in prison (even the minimal security prison she was sent to).
I couldn’t STAND the character of Simon right from the beginning of the book — his over-inflated ego, his “pompous-ass” persona, his “it’s all about ME, ME, ME” attitude. What kind of man, at the age of 31 wants to marry a 15-year-old??? Not a NORMAL one…it’s one thing to appreciate their cute little bodies from afar, but to want to MARRY a child of 15? NO. My instincts about him were right. I grew to HATE him (the writer’s purpose I believe).
The narrator did an excellent job throughout the book. I especially enjoyed her portrayal of Rose.
Although this is not my usual kind of book, I believe I will find another book by this author and give it a try.
My First, and NOT My Last Book by This Author…

Then there is the narrator. Susan Stafford did a superb job! She is able to read the authors words right off the page and plant them directly into your imagination. Susan deftly separates each character into bigger than life, realistic individuals. I loved the way she 'read' Felicity. This is a great book on it's own. But it's an even greater
audio book.
What a great book!
