About this listen

I Pitched a Tent in Hell is a memoir told through memory and music. Taylor Barton's poignant song collection tells the story of triumph, loss, and reconciliation. She describes what it was like as a young woman riding the bus on tour with Dylan to meeting up with Martin Luther King's children.

Meandering through challenging circumstances, she eloquently paints the picture of a woman lost in a world of grief, coming to grips with who she is and what she stands for. I Pitched a Tent in Hell is a courageous, moving look inside the mind of a brilliant songwriter.

I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Taylor Barton read her new memoir about her adventures and “sins” (what I would call ‘misadventures’), her family, her artistic endeavors, her thoughts on life, love and spirituality. She is always forthright and revealing which is very brave! Taylor is a remarkably productive person and has created another wonderful work of art.

I listened to I Pitched A Tent in Hell twice. First as a whole and again particularly for the songs with which Taylor Barton illustrates this wonderful musical memoir. That is: she sings the songs she wrote—each one of which pertains to the part of the book it illustrates. She was a child of privilege who ran away at age thirteen. And she kept running to the back streets of Boston, to tour with Bob Dylan, to wrangle horses in Wyoming and to search for peace in India. This audiobook gave me a look into her exciting life—which also had its share of tragedies. Music was her ambition, her demon, her lover, her friend. I couldn’t recommend I Pitched My Tent in Hell more highly more highly:10 stars!
