About this listen

This program is read by the author and includes original music and a bonus conversation with Amy Ray of Indigo Girls.

From the Grammy-nominated folk singer and songwriter, an inspiring exploration of creativity and the redemptive power of song.

Mary Gauthier was 12 years old when she was given her Aunt Jenny’s old guitar and taught herself to play with a Mel Bay basic guitar workbook. Music offered her a window to a world where others felt the way she did. Songs became lifelines to her, and she longed to write her own, one day.

Then, for a decade, while struggling with addiction, Gauthier put her dream away and her call to songwriting faded. It wasn’t until she got sober and went to an open mic with a friend did she realize that she not only still wanted to write songs, she needed to. Today, Gauthier is a decorated musical artist, with numerous awards and recognition for her songwriting, including a Grammy nomination.

In Saved by a Song, Mary Gauthier pulls the curtain back on the artistry of songwriting. Part memoir, part philosophy of art, part nuts and bolts of songwriting, her audiobook celebrates the redemptive power of song to inspire and bring seemingly different kinds of people together.

A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin's Essentials

"Generous and big-hearted, Gauthier has stories to tell and worthwhile advice to share." (Wally Lamb, author of I Know This Much Is True)

"Gauthier has an uncanny ability to combine songwriting craft with a seeker’s vulnerability and a sage’s wisdom.” (Amy Ray, Indigo Girls)

Worth every minute of your time

This book offered so much more than I expected. Honestly, it’s probably the best audiobook I’ve listened to given the way the music is interwoven and is part of the educational components and storytelling. I’m so glad that Mary narrated it herself. I found myself in a conversation with her, and tearing up all along the way. It’s beautifully written, and beautifully narrated. It accomplishes so much more than its stated purpose. It blew my heart wide open. So grateful that a Lori McKenna podcast led me to Mary Gauthier and to this book. Books like these make the world a more beautiful and kind place.

A revelation in songwriting

As a straight man, just discovering Mary’s music, I absolutely loved her clear communication and her genuineness. Though her queerness is a very strong part of her life, she is so clear about it that it felt somehow so refreshing. It evolved into more of a memoir without sacrificing the intent of how to write songs. I was totally drawn into her story and felt inspired.

Amazing life & spiritual journey from a master Songwritet!

Im familiar with Mary’s career and have always respected her. But, I was unexpectedly enthralled by the audio book. Excellent production throughout. This is really wonderful, edge of your seat material whether you write songs or not. Dive deep and read it, listen to it, get into it any way you can. Good stuff!

Raw, real, masterfully composed

If you love truth - raw, real truth - this book is for you. I feel honored to bear witness as a listener to this beautiful distillation of a difficult life made better. You do not need to be a songwriter to love this but if you are .. this is essential reading/listening.

Outstanding

I’m glad I chose to listen to this as an audible book instead of a paper book. Mary’s voice and music add so so much to the experience of this book. This book is deeply personal and amazing. Highly recommend.

Powerful and inspiring

So thankful to have listened to this book, on the suggestion of my brother, Connor, who is a singer/songwriter touched deeply by Mary’s work and wisdom. Although I am not a musician the wisdom and work of Mary Gauthier as she serves others through her craft is deeply inspiring!
