About this listen

When Vonlee "Nicole" Titlow and her aunt, Billie Jean Rogers, came home from a night of gambling in a casino near Detroit, they told police they found Billie's husband unconscious on the floor of the Rogers' mansion. Just another of his alcoholic benders, they assumed. But this time, Donald Rogers didn't wake up.

The investigation would reveal the sordid story behind the death of a self-made millionaire - including transgender adventures in Chicago and Denver, a tangled web of dueling addictions, a mind-boggling history of out-of-control spending, and how a sex change operation may have fueled a motive for murder. Renowned investigative journalist M. William Phelps exposes the riveting details behind one of the most astonishing real-life thrillers to date.

Great book about the death of Don Rogers

If you could sum up If You Only Knew in three words, what would they be?

Great book about the murder of Don Rogers by Billie Jean Rogers, aided by Vonlee Nicole Titlow. This case was anything but "normal". Very intense story, with the 3 main characters as different from each other as night and day. Phelps researched this very well and was able to convey all the necessary facts in a way for readers to understand what happened and the mind of one of the participants. I was sucked in really quick, from beginning to end, feeling emotionally attached to Vonlee Titlow. This book has become one of my favorites from Phelps and I am sure it will stay with me for a while. M. William Phelps has a way to draw you into the story he is trying to convey. He brings the characters to life. I loved this book.

Look for a Possibility Abridged Version

Interesting story through and through- from the murder to the trials. But the story was just too lengthy. The same thing stated over and over and over. I read/listen to a great deal of true crime stories and understand that some things are going to repeat but this one was over the top.

Could have been half as long.

This author usually delivers a better book. The idea was good enough but much of the first half of the book was repetitive to point where I skipped ahead repeatedly until a new thought began. Good narration.

A lot of added fluff

The story could have been shorter. I hate the narrator!! 😡 The way he reads and takes a longer pause when someone “says” something, is so darn annoying. I think I would have liked it a bit more if someone else was narrating.

Bizarre Tale of Senseless Miseries

This is a story of unnecessary evil. Family exploitation of unnecessary wants and needs. The mastermind escapes justice and the full weight of the crime falls upon a needy tortured transexual with a drinking problem. The details keep you gawking because the story is so bizarre. The underbelly of family dynamics. Unusual solutions to minor desires and needs. The victim threatened nobody about anything. Family cannibalism is where three people manage to destroy one another in a perfectly good life. I couldn't put the book down. Great writing and narration.

Narrator…UGH!!!

This is the 2nd Phelps book I’ve listened to at 2x speed. It makes the narrator a bit less cringeworthy. WHY does he use the voice inflections he does. It’s AWFUL!!! William…coach your narrator or get a new one!
I agree with other reviewers that it was a little drawn out. However, it was an interesting story and one I hadn’t heard before.

weird narration

It's like watching a high school forensics student perform all the parts in a play by changing his voice cartoonishly. For hours. And hours. Will avoid all books by this narrator Jonathan Yen, gives me a headache.
