About this listen

In a world ruled by strict traditions and laws, one brave woman is willing to risk everything to earn her freedom.

Perla, a young Jewish woman, was raised in an extreme ultra-orthodox society. When she turns 18, and her parents have a hard time finding a match for her, she is thrown into the arms of a cold, violent man who makes her life unbearable.

A forbidden, chance encounter with a man, and the feelings that ensue, make her begin to question everything she has ever known - and even consider that, maybe, she does not have to choose this life that has been thrust upon her. But she knows that once she makes a drastic decision, there will be no way back into the arms of the Jewish community.

Immodest tells the story of a courageous young woman who chooses to obey the commandments of her heart, and not give up, despite the huge price she is forced to pay.

Disappointing

First, it was most annoying to hear the narrator mispronounce so many of the Yiddish/Hebrew words and expressions. The story was one of many similar stories of women (and men) leaving the Hasidic community. This was one of the weakest of such stories with the main character contradicting herself in many instances as she shared her difficulties with various supporting characters throughout her story. It was a quick read and it did hold my attention as I wanted to hear how Pearl’s life turned out in the end.

Immodest

This was a beautiful story. It was so heartwarming to see how one person could break away from years of torture and being imprisoned in your mind and soul. I recommend this for anybody that wants to learn how the Hasidic Community. Pearl was strong with lots of faith that was bestowed upon her by all her friends they helped her on the journey . The performance was a little iffy, Yiddish words with the meanings translated into English was not thought out well .
Maybe somebody should do the story again and learn how to pronounce the Yiddish Hebrew words. It was very annoying to hear it but didn’t take away from the true story that was so beautiful.

such a let down

this could have been a real glimpse into a world that few know. unfortunately, no one told the narrator how to pronounce the yiddish words and she managed to get most wrong. The constant "footnote " and "end footnote " was also annoying but not sure how that could be avoided. The narrator constantly sounded overwrought. I strongly recommend reading this book in print if you are interested in the topic.
