About this listen

New York, 1777. As the American Revolution rages on the mainland, the British Navy prepares for action at sea. Against a growing fleet of American and French privateers, the Navy must maintain its blockade of Washington's vital military supplies. Caught up in the turmoil, junior officer Richard Bolitho finds himself having to make momentous decisions in the heat of battle, decisions that will affect the lives of many men, and perhaps the outcome of history.©1998 Alexander Kent (P)2014 Audible, Inc Fiction Historical Fiction War & Military Royal Navy

Kent...and Bolitho, are growing on me

Having just now finished the 5th book in this Bolitho series, I find myself growing more accepting of Lt. Bolitho and Kent's imaginative writing of the ways of an 18th Century sailing ship of English Navy. I look forward to his further sea adventures.

A rollicking tale of adventure on the high seas.

I love historical military fiction and Richard Bolitho is a great character. He isn't perfect and questions his motives while admiring opposing styles of command for each commander's strengths and learning from both

Michael Jayson is an excellent narrator and does the various British accents well without going over the top. If I have one complaint, it is his American accent but then most British narrators seem to have a problem with over exaggerating "American" speaking especially considering late 18th and early 19th century Americans often had accents from their homelands.

All in all, a very enjoyable week of commuting to and from work.
