About this listen
Familiar landmarks appear, but the water teems with monstrous, vicious fish. And there appear to be dinosaurs grazing on the plains of Bali. Gradually Matt and his crew must accept the fact that they are in an alternate world---and they are not alone. Humans have not evolved, but two other species have. And they are at war.
With its steam power and weaponry, the Walker's very existence could alter the balance of power. And for Matt and his crew, who have the means to turn a primitive war into a genocidal Armageddon, one thing becomes clear: They must decide whose side they're on. Because whoever they choose to side with is the winner.

Story
You know, life is funny sometimes. When I stumbled across a strange weather phenomenon in the middle of the woods, I could have sworn that it was just a prank from one of my friends. But the truth was, it was a portal, and as soon as I touched it I found myself in a new world, one filled with orcs and elves and most notably, goblins. The breathtaking beauty of the goblin women was something I never would have expected, but hey. Learn something new every day. They had a problem, though. A serious problem.

Fight, survive, adapt, and rely only on yourself. That is Derek’s creed and what's got him through the System Integration on Earth. Everything changed when the System came. Cute bunnies and beautiful butterflies became savage killing machines. Then the Invaders arrived with a single goal: to obtain ownership of this new habitable planet. War has raged ever since. None of this mattered much to Derek, aside from making living a little more perilous.

The West's own governments are giving up, have already lost, or are leading the charge to something else. This doesn't sit well with those who believe in liberty. Story
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

Story
The USS Seawolf was one of the greatest submarine raiders of all time. Having narrowly avoided the attack on Pearl Harbor the Seawolf set out for the seas of the Pacific to wreak havoc on Japanese shipping. Joseph Melvin Eckberg was on the Seawolf from her maiden voyage and remained with her until January 1943. As chief radioman he was instrumental in assisting Captain Frederick Warder to find and destroy enemy targets. From the claustrophobia of being trapped under water and the overwhelming fear of depth charges to the joys of aiding the war-effort and the camaraderie on the ship.

Before he was anointed to carry on the legacy of Robert Ludlum's Janson Command series, and before he collaborated with Clive Cussler on the fan favorite Isaac Bell series, Justin Scott created this suspenseful adventure tale, a novel of love and revenge set on the high seas. Written in 1978, this is considered by many to be one of the best maritime thrillers of all time. As an expert in the world of ships and sailing, Justin Scott creates an authentic maritime world, making The Shipkiller all the more thrilling because it could be a true story.

Into the Breach
I started this book with some concern that it wouldn't live up to my high hopes. I was very happy to find that it grabbed my attention right away. The description of the battle that led to the ship entering the storm captivated me right away. The author kept up with detail but also came up with an interesting approach to a parallel Earth. I very much enjoyed how the crew of the Walker deal with a local threat and the need to find resources that don't exist yet. The author did a great job of keeping the story interesting and on target. I look forward to the next book in this series!

USS Walker Cat Monkeys vs. Evil Lizards!
No, that would not work as a title but the "review" of this book doesn't do it justice as a summary either. I realized that wasn't the intention, but that was all I had to go on when I decided to download this book. Glad I did. If your thing is epic SciFi, this book I recommend. Yes it is Book 1 and yes it is a commitment when beginning a series like this (that Book 2, 3, 4, etc. are not already written) BUT this is a "very good" SciFi book. Can't wait for Book 2.

Riveting Read, Numb Narration
From the very first, the author sucks you right into the most improbable situations and causes your suspension of disbelief,to flow seamlessly. Whether you're a fan of naval action or a sci-fi nut, (or both like me), you can effortlessly forgo reality and take an escape. The author weaves the technology of a US Navy, 1919 WICKES Class destroyer into an entire world, all of his own creation. The sole problem is the failure of the narrator to do his homework to learn how to pronounce simple naval and military terms properly. Someone needs to explain to Mr. Dufris that a B.A.R., (Browning Automatic Rifle), is not a 'public house', and so isn't pronounced, "bar", and that the front of a ship, the fo'c's'le, differs from a "focksall" or a "foxhole". His constant and nerve grating mispronunciations through ALL 3 books ought to have been caught by the producers. These are only 2 examples of everyday terms that are consistently mangled by the narrator to the detriment of an otherwise excellent story. The flow of the story is significantly effected by the narrator's ignorance of things both Naval and military, making it all too obvious that all 3 books were recorded at the same time - and that the producers didn't really care.

Not bad!
Entertaining! Great story line and pleasantly pleased. Can't wait to purchase the next book in the series. Well worth the credit. Only negative was the narrator....sounded too feminine to me for the parts and makes the characters sound goofy imo, but that is the only reason I didn't rare five stars.

Think 1950s characters and you have this novel
Any additional comments?
1950s gestalt fits the bill for this ~YA-genre story. WWII meets SciFi. Good reader. One technical hitch: production editor needed to put in a small pause in narration to signify one chapter ending and next chapter beginning. Enjoyable, particularly in learning about destroyer boat architecture and military protocol, but not enough that I will be pursuing the rest of the series.

this is a fantastic story and not at all what I thought it was going to be by looking at the cover. the reader and the writer did a fantastic job. there are a couple of slow sections while character development is happening but that's typical for the first book I'm going to immediately read the second

Great romp for sci-fi and history buffs.
The start of a good series...great fun and interesting story line. As one who has studied the "real" history on which the story is based, the details are important and largely accurate. The sci-fi aspect is great as well. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
