About this listen

Arising out of Naipaul’s lifelong obsession and passion for a country that is at once his and totally alien, India: A Million Mutinies Now relates the stories of many of the people he met traveling there more than 50 years ago. He explores how they have been steered by the innumerable frictions present in Indian society - the contradictions and compromises of religious faith, the whim and chaos of random political forces. This book represents Naipaul’s last word on his homeland, complementing his two other India travelogues, An Area of Darkness and India: A Wounded Civilization.

An Ambitious account of a vision of India

India with many of its flavors, sounds, colors and people is challenge to describe. I've avoided Naipul all these years fearing his was a potentially deficient view of my birthplace. And I was wrong. This travelogue is a discovery of an India, beautifully portrayed, yet with an uncritical prose that allows you to make what you will. I find some plausible explanations for the India I know and also for what it appears to have become now. the narrator is brilliant, though his accents may require a curious amount of accomodation for some.

AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ

I researched the Internet for review, written by people who had read the book. Almost all of them were four stars.
I highly recommend this book if you are at all interested in India.
The book was written a number of years ago.
India has come a long way since then.
I believe India will be a world power.
The people are ambitious and not afraid to better themselves.
Above all they are very intelligent.
The concern is that China will team up with India.
America has to prevent that at all costs.
President Trump understands the importance of India. This was reflected in his historical meeting with India’s prime minister.
There is so much information in this book to absorb. I will certainly listen to it again in the future.
An interesting site to explore is “Google Earth”.
You can explore the cities mentioned in the book and the beautiful architecture of the buildings that have stood the test of time.
The narrator, mr. Sam Dastor is beyond excellent.
As always, my thanks to all involved in making this book available, JK.
